Sorry I missed this post, but no it's not crazy & that's just one of the repairs I considered.

I'm still running the rubber stoppers, BTW (If you saw my other post on this subject) and they could be stiffer, so I intend to change them for some urethane skateboard bushings.

I still intend some other improvement to the rag joint, but I've put it off for over a year. Evidently I've been too busy skating to work on the truck much. :D

Figured I'd bump this up. Did it to my truck about a week ago. Feels so much more solid going over bumps and uneven surfaces.

got the zip tie in but there still is a clunk... ive had this problem for almost two years and cannot find anything, clunk is when i shake the steering wheel while stopped. if i shake the steering wheel while moving, no clunk, just swerves all over the road.

Just did the zip tie mod this morning. I had my doubts but I took it on a bumpy dirt road by my house and it worked. Wish I had tried this awhile ago. I looped it together so it would not come undone and I cut the excess off of it. This is my best mod to date!!

Have other 2012 owners had this same issue? My problem may be the same, but maybe someone can confirm it for me. What I noticed is usually if I runn over the road lane markers (or bumps), then I get almost a rattle of the entire steering column. This sounds the same as what everyone else is saying this fixes. Anyone else having the same issue on a 2012?

it was hard for me to notice going over road titties because of the noise going over it. i first noticed going over a rough gravel road. not very fast and it clunked away... just had the tsb done and picking the truck up in the morning. im hoping it fixed it. i almost did the zip tie fix, but decided i wanted toyota to fix it. we will see if mine is one that gets fixed with their tsb...

just a quick update... i know some had the tsb done and it still rattles for them, but im happy to say that the tsb worked perfectly. I took it to an off road park to give it the real test and was perfectly quiet and smooth. I would say, if you are one of the folks that had it done and it still rattles... take it back and make them do it again!

Mine doesn't necessarily clunk like everyone is describing here but it is starting to rattle. It has a general loose feeling to it. My 07 was solid as hell. On rough, bumpy freeway it's like you are feeling the bumps in the steering column.

This fix worked great. I was disturbed that my new taco had this steering feeling. The fix made it feel like a new truck should. Ty.

What if we were to put a zip tie tightly around the base of the firewall hole. Then, run a zip tie around that, then around the shaft. To "pull" the shaft to one side of the firewall hole. To keep it snug? Definitely gonna try this in about an hour. Anybody see any potential issues with this?

Even if it works it will not last long. It will rub through the zip tie.

The sideways movement isn't an issue before the firewall I discovered today. There is movement in the engine bay though. I don't like that joint just behind the dust cover. Also. I do have bad steering rack bushings. Ive been trying to find the bushing size online and in manuals. So even if energy doesn't make them. I can find a bushing of the same size and general shape and force that sucker in there. Anyone have any measurements on that bolt and holes?

Definite improvement but still F'ed up. No new vehicle should have this vibe. Tires must have something to do with it too.

Just tried this on my '12 SR5 DC LB.

I had to shave the tie down a bit to get it to fit in, but it's now in there and snug.

Haven't taken it off road yet but giving the steering column a before and after wiggle was very promising.

    Thanks!

bump. every taco owner should do this, takes 80% of the "slop" out of the wheel when you hit a bump
