Hi guys, I have looseness in the steering, like 1" in steering wheel when going over bump, comes with noise too. Only 40k on the truck ('04), what is it? Common? TSB? Rack, Rack bushings, Tie Rod ends? Obviously I'll check it all out when I put in on the lift, but any heads up as to what to look for would be great, thanks!:)

Could be several things... You gotta get it on the lift and inspect all those things you mentioned.

I replaced steering rack bushings on my 96 with 80k miles but only because I knew there was some minor play in it. The entire rack felt loose. I didn't necessarily have a 'on-road' condition up to that point.

I've got an (new to me) older truck with many more miles and also experience some squirreliness when going over bumps. I'm interested in knowing what the common wear points are in the front ends/steering of these trucks.

From my reviews, I've seen the following mentioned as possible causes. My truck is a 98 with nearly 200K.

    • Steering rack bushings - easy fix
    • Sway bar bushings - easy fix
    • Shocks - easy but more expensive fix
Any other common problems I should be looking for once I get a chance to put this thing in the air and look?

    Thanks.

    Thanks guys.
I need to check it out. I'll check ball joints, and te rod ends too.
Local Toyota dealer was no help, I asked if there was any TSB's, and the answer (we're all familiar with) was "no".
I find it hard to believe, actually, becuase so many people complain about it. My truck is an '04 with 42k on it...but feels like I have 200k on it!
