What did your buddy do prior to the steering wheel coming apart?

Beat the crap out of it?

Honestly I have no idea, his truck is an 05. He said he was adjusting it and as he pulled it out it just separated and fell apart.

That's reassuring. I guess if you put too much on it adjusting it, the whole thing can come out. I could see it happening with the cheap tin clip and nylon spacer in there.

Maybe the OP tried to fix the wheel himself and fired the airbag? :notsure:

Dealing with the steering column/ wheel drop issue with my 05 taco... I have searched and searched how to fix this to no avail. So I just joined your guys’ forum about five minutes ago, then Ran outside to take pics and a video ( I apologize in advance of the quality) of what I’m talking about with the steering wheel falling down into my lap. First happened when I got a bump, and a metal tab fell on my floor board. When pushing the wheel all the way in and lifting and sliding back it will go back in place. But it’s sketchy at best... I’ll try and figure out how to post the video explaining it

What can I say, it gets used as a pickup should ... there’s a reason I yanked the carpet and hurculiner’d the floor boards. Makes it easy to clean up when it’s not the mud season in western oregon

Look carefully at the components and then the Installation pages below!

It looks like the plastic clips are broken that holds the piece that fell out. That is what prevents the over travel and coming apart of the column.

Would you possibly know what those clips are called or where to find them ? I’ve searched through Toyota parts’ online diagram and couldn’t find those clips listed. I don’t want to have to buy a new column for just the clips... Toyota pickings at junk yards are pretty slim in this area

I got nothing either. Go to the dealer parts counter they should be able to at least get you a part number.

Definitely just has the same thing happen to me on my 08 Tacoma when adjusting the steering wheel. Was sitting in my driveway when it happened.
