Ive had this problem, and i took it in also, they said everything checked out fine and concluded that it was packed snow (from wisconsin) on the inside of the wheel. after it had melted it was fine.

I have a 2011 TIX PRO with the bead rim. I have been fighting this same problem. It started about 2600 miles. I found a wheel weight in the driveway took it in, I think six times. 2 wheels found out of round or what ever they want to call it. One was replaced but other one has not. It has been balanced every way you can. I am going to fight a little longer with the dealer. Then I will file under the lemon law. Note I only have 3600 miles now.

I had a shake @ around 55mph on dealer balanced wheels.. 3rd party road force balance did the trick for me.

EDIT: Both sets of aftermarket rims are manifesting the shake.. but only after the truck was parked for a few days [EG. fine from dealer install initially].. I am using conical lug nuts. Going to jack her up and take a closer look.

I have had a prob like this with another vehicle and they had to reset the computer to let it know what the different size tires I was running on the vehicle.

One of my buddies who is a mechanic at a Toyota dealership said it's my tires - the BF Goodrich TKO All-Terrain are apparently not a very smooth ride. Anyone recommend some nice tires that aren't necessarily off road but don't look like plain ole street tires?

you can still get an all terrain tire, just make sure its standard load. Chances are your BFG's are prob load range C, D or even E which means they can support more weight, but those heavy range tires are not really necessary for our relatively light trucks. Standard load tires are easier to balance and ride better b/c they aren't as stiff and are lighter. Check out tirerack...

What are they doing to fix it that last a week or so. The thread says problems started after new spindles were put on. I would rec the roadforce balance and agree w/stick on wheel weights also put duct tape over them(helps keep them there).. Back to the spindles since thats when vibration started were jam nuts , cotter pins and locking nuts used (potential loose parts if not) ask to see the alignment specs. The frt wheel caster can cause a very bad vibration if not equal along with poor return to center after a turn

I've had the same tire on for 30k miles and I don't have a shake that bad... but I love the tire wouldn't know how it compares to the nitto since I've never had them... as far as fixing the problem, my old truck had the same problem and all I had to do was replace the steering damper shock, does anyone know if the 2nd gens have this too (its been a while since I looked at my front suspension and I don't remember) but it could be that u just need to upgrade that shock??

    Damn that's a nice set of tires.

Well.... I finally am getting my Steering shaft TSB done tomorrow. Took it in today and turns out I need a new battery (bad cell), also a new blower motor (squeeking again). This was my 3rd attempt at asking for the steering tsb.

1)The first time their response was that my skid plate was loose...(really?...)

2)The second time they couldn't replicate the problem, and I couldnt show them on the road...

3)This third time I had to take a tech on a drive to show him again so I found a dirt/grass access road that was real bumpy and surely eough the tech definitely felt and heard the steering issue. :D

Can't wait till tomorrow to get it fixed, have heard it feels great after. I'll post the results...

I had a shimmy in the steering wheel of my stock Tacoma that remained after the dealership rebalanced the wheels. The shimmy was odd as it came and went while driving a smooth road between 55 – 70 MPH with the cruise control on. I noticed it appeared when lightly turning the steering wheel as if to keep the truck centered in the lane or while steering around a mild curve. I wondered if it was related to alignment as it felt like tire scrub.

The dealership then found I had two Dunlop AT20 Grandtreks that exceeded 16 lbs on the Road Force balancer. Both were replaced under the tire warranty and all four rebalanced using the Road Force balancer. The shake in the steering wheel is mostly gone, although I still detect it slightly under certain road conditions.

I've got the same problem but its only when I go off road

The steering wheel is tight and doesn't move at all when stopped (duhhh shouldnt )

No vibrations when going 50-80mph on paved roads

    On gravel road it vibrates

Didn't notice this until recently when my parents mentioned it and now its been bothering me.

At first I figured its normal because I'm on gravel road and its supposed to vibrate and make some noises

To me it sounds like the shaft or whatever is lose within the steering wheel...is that normal?

Or could it be my tires/rims? 16"black rocks w/ 265/70r16 cooper stt

    Any tips/advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

you have nothing to worry about, Toyota makes their steering tight and responsive and you will feel bumps (even minor) a lot, especially on a rough road. If its smooth at highway speeds on a relatively well maintained highway, then its fine. Also you have agressive heavier tires so you will feel some more "hum" with those as well. I think your fine...

i didn't read all 14 pages of this so disregard if this has already been said. I was experiencing steering wheel shake, i took it in and it had to do with the rear brakes. They somehow got misaligned or something, im not that mechanically savvy. Anyway so the front brakes were doing more work. $280 later and it drives like new again.
