I decided to get under the thing last night to thoroughly clean the inside of the rims because the wheel shake was driving me nuts... and lo and behold, what do you know... ROCK SOLID with no shake whatsoever. I really didn't occur to me to do this before because I don't mud or drive on dirt roads (other than the winter) and my dealer just rotated my tires under Toyota care... Shouldn't they pay more attention to this?

Did you remove anything while cleaning(mud, etc)? Or was it just brake dust that was cleaned off and the shake was gone?

YES! There was perhaps over an ounce of accumulated "Road sand" on the inside of the rims on each wheel. More than just "Brake dust"... Well worth the 10 Mins it took to do it and it was free :D Gotta like that!

i know everybody has had there input but i just had to get my tires changed out because the wore down in the middle of the tread about every six inches was a slick spot. This is a result of not getting the tires rotated like i was supposed too. :( But the good news is try getting them rotated and if that doesnt fix it you need to start checking your a frames and cv joints to make sure everything down there is kosher.

I had that probleom a while ago.. It turns out I had bought a deffective tire.. It was alittle odd shaped/ not perfectly round.... It was actually an older geuy at a mom and pop tire shop that figured it out.. Actually took the time , removed the tires and inspected them one by one.. A big name brand tire shop will just put it through the machine and not really look closely.. If it's defective you can get it replaced for free minus tax disposal fee..

mine has the shake well it comes and goes, but I brought it down to the dealer ship and they re balanced the tires, but it has the OEM RIMS with the OEM tires on it still bearly at 10000 miles, how could the factory mess up the balance on tires for its own truck? 3 tires were rebalanced and 1 was fine. and from the rim scaring I can see they removed the old and put on some new ones.

I had the same problem on my Taco. Took it in and they checked the tires. Toyota replaced 1 front tire. They said it had hard spots and that caused road force. You may want to take your vehicle in.

So how do you know for sure if the wheels or the brakes?

Its the tires. Always check the tires first. Rotate, balance and double check. Most likely is the tires.

If it only shakes when the brakes are "applied" then it is the brake rotors warped. Going down the road and it shakes is the tires/rims/balance.

Jack her up, loosen all the tire nuts and then do a cross pattern tightening them back up and use a torque wrench for the final tighten. If you do this to ALL your wheels it may just clear up your braking shakes. Worth a try and the price is right!

Tire change did the trick for me- eliminated my steering wheel vibes.

I experienced the steering wheel vibe for over a year when running my first set of replacement tires, BFG All-Terrains. I switched over to Toyo MT's(similar size, 265/75/16)

Just wanted to say that when I had my tires balanced today because of a vibration, I watched the tech, and he didn't use the adapter (after I specifically asked the sales rep to make sure they use it). I had them do it again with the adapter, and each wheel was out of balance...the other tech who did it right said 5 and 7-5 for all the tires, so I'm guessing that's ounces? Either way I guess this is proof that the adapter makes a difference. The vibe is now gone! Also, do watch when you get your tires balanced.

I have the shakes still after changing tires and wheels. Had dealer balance and its was no difference. Took it back they switched wheels and road force balanced them and its still there. I put my own tires and rims on which are balanced and etc and still have the same shake in the steering wheel! WTF!!!

Ok. I bit the bullet and purchased a set of Michelin LTX M/S 2 tires, since Discount Tire is having a $100 rebate visa card. Wow these tires are awesome, they are very quiet, smooth, and grip the road! It seems to have fixed my steering wheel shake. I also noticed the wheels barely took any weight at all! I hope the shake does not come back, crossing my fingers.
