I had the same problem and had wheels/tires balanced over and over and over, had alignment done over and over and over, check bushings, you name it. finally another tacoma owner told me to check the breaks. BAM! 1 wharped disk was the cause, had that fixed and all was good.

just a tip hope it helps :)

    cheers,

It's been well over a week since the steering rack (44250-04030, Gear Assy, Power) was replaced. My steering wheel no longer shakes at highway speeds. It took a while and some persistence, but the truck is back to how it was when I bought it. Thanks to Chuck and team at Acton Toyota of Littleton, MA! Note, this was not a road vibration issue. My steering wheel was vibrating at around 35 and 75 MPH and it seemed to start after new tires. So, it seemed logical to blame tires, rims, balance, alignment, etc., but after numerous attempts at all of those, it was time to look elsewhere. They found excessive free play in the rack and replaced the rack. No more shake! Thanks to all who participate here for the advice.

So I got a 2012 Toyota corolla as a rental while the inspected my 2012 DC with 7800miles on it. It did the same thing! Only it was much worse than my DC. I could barely keep it straight on the road and was thinking wow is this what I have to look forward to if it's not fixed? In the end the shop has ordered a new rack. Its on back order for two weeks.

Haha, it was "free" under extra care. The rack was like $920, total was around $1400, but it was covered.

Fixed my shake with new alloy wheels and tires. No more shake! bought the truck with old 265/75/16 tires that had uneven wear from the alignment being off. One steel wheel was never balanced correctly. Needless to say the shake started at 55 and never stopped. Feels like a new truck!

Stealership replaced my steering rack with only 8k miles. The problem started at 4k. I took it in every 1k when it started. I finally called corporate logged a case and when the repair shop called to see how my repair went I let the person know. The shake, wandering and clunk noise is gone finally. We'll see how long it lasts. The funny thing is now that the rack is fixed I can feel the play in the intermediate shaft I read so much about.

You can read my saga in my previous posts. It was no problem getting it covered under extra care. The problem was getting them to look beyond the tires and alignment to find the real problem. They were as happy as I was to resolve this.

Steering wheel shake is most likely balance issues. Shake in the pedal would be rotors.

I just went through both of these problems. Balance fixed my steering wheel shake and new rotors fixed the vibes in the pedal.

rotors are woorped(think thats spelled right) sorry i dont spell, only turn wrenches for a living, u can have them turned at any legit shop or can buy some new ones, just make sure u clean off the film there shipped with, could cause break squeal over time if not

Same dumb azz problem going on here and been dealing with it for over 7k miles on 2012 Taco with Texas edition wheels as well. Slight steering wheel vibs with all wheels rebalanced, switched around at dealer and discount, found bad alignment and rebalanced about 5 times...fixed to a slight vib, but now its back to vibs and azz end vibs at 70-80mph.

Wondering what has become of the recall toyota said they were in the works on???

I'm now about to call stealership and see what they say, but I doubt they will give out info.

    Thanks, Dan

Heard any update on that fix that they said they are working on? I have same issues on 2012 Taco and I called toyota customer care, to which they said they have not heard of any recall or fix in the works.

I was recently talking to the service manager at my local dealer about my steering wheel shake. He introduced me to a regional Toyota service rep who was in his office. I asked him if Toyota was going issue a recall about the shake, he had no knowledge of any recall. He says he has heard of a few complaints, but there is no recall in the works.

Spoke to my dealer OM this week.
The fix is still not complete and in testing, whatever that means.

Her up line Toyota rep says the fix is expensive and they wanna get it right.
Being very close mouthed about release date, or cost for fear of law suits, she says.

It has been 3 months since they diagnosed the driveline issue. She is getting back to me about a release date as I told them I'm itred of driving my truck like this.

I told them if they can't fix it I want my Suburban back. My money soent just fine and now my truck has a defect?

Only other option is to go have a custom 1 piece drive line made and installed,
I am 99% sure this the issue

By nature, I am not a patient man. This issue has caused me to be patient.
My dealer OM called me back today and assured me the fix is not far off.

I have to wait, I have escalated this up as far as I can without being an A**hole. I believe my dealer will come thru.

The fix is real; expensive, but real. I just have to wait. Man I hate that.

I hope your source is correct. I too have been very patient & the service manager has been great working with me to try to sort the shake. I'm wondering if the Toyota rep I met was just covering his knowledge of a pending fix or wasn't privy to any information.
