Good morning folks. I have a little update on my tremors and shakes. I have replaced the Procomp Load Range E's, installed hubcentric rings, ordered lugnuts, and had Discount Tire in Rockwall, TX perform the Road Force Balance with the Hunter 9700 balancer. I am happy to report that most of the vibes and shakes are eliminated. I think the lugs, once installed will eliminate most, if not all of the Steering Wheel Shake. To recap:

    1. Kumho P series tires: P286 70 R 17 raod Venture A/T 32 psi front, 28 psi rear. ( I like Nitto Terra Grapplers, but these were on sale)

    2. Hubcentric Rings: 106mm inner, 108mm outer. Tried plastic first, too much flex, ordering aluminum rings this time around (pricey). check your aftermarket rims bore size, 108mm for Dick Cepek/Mickey Thompson rims.

    3. Gorilla Lug Nuts: Part #41138ET x 24. Again Check your Rims to see what style they need. You can get conical and acorn/acorn bulge with the extended thread (ET) set up.

    4. Road Force Balance with Hunter 9700 Balancer and Haweka Adapter (If the tire shop does not know what you are talking about leave immediately. Without these tools, virtually impossible to balance for our trucks). I used Discount Tire because they have the gear and have been trained to use it. Additionally, there is a 90 day warranty on the balance. I even threw out the challenge to the tech to get it right by betting a twelve pack (of preferred tasty beverage) that he could not get right the first time. This really motivated him to take his time and give me the best possible results. Trust me, I have some experience in the tire business, and a customer that appreciates his Tire Tech gets taken care of just like a customer that appreciates his Barber, Dentist, or Doctor, you get my drift.

After these steps, I'd say 98% of my vibration is gone. I will tackle the rotors and brakes next. I love this truck. When I bought it I knew it had been neglected. With a little love, I will get it where I want it.

    Until next time, Happy wheelin'.

We put my truck on a lift. We attemped to measure the run out of my wheels/tires. We jigged something up to allow to see if the wheel/tire when rotating would have any run out or anything. With what we got made up and tested the whole assembly rotated without a sign of "wobble".

Is this test accurate or does putting the assemblies on the ground and running them that way cause a different affects than if its in mid air?

Maybe over the weekend I will remove a wheel and measure the diameter difference between the hub and wheel.

I had the shake issue between 50-65 mph. Ended up putting hubcentric spacers on also and had to lose the center caps on my pro comp 7098s. Feels alot better now

I bought mine used. It is a 2008 4 cyl model. It shook from day 1 between 30-45 mph and then between 60-70mph. I heard others complain about the same thing, on this forum, and elsewhere. Overall, I am not happy with my pick up. They don't seem to have the build quality of the older models.

Mine has a horrible shake the wheel of of yor hands vibration at 65. But it really started when I added spacers to the stock wheels. I had the wheels balanced and the wierd thing was it went away for about 1000 miles then came back slowly to now at 4k miles on the balance it's shaking out of my hand again. I'm going to go and get new tires see if that fixes it. If not then the spacers are coming off and see what happens.

Since I have eliminated the vibration from the tires and rims, I have noticed a slight shake when braking now. After some research, I have found out that over torque-ing the lug nuts will cause the rotors to warp. The shop that installed my Kumhos a couple weeks ago did not use a torque wrench when installing the new tires. They just hammered them on with an impact gun (against my pleas and objections). If the lugs are too tight, the rotors cannot "float" between the brake pads. This can cause vibration as well or warping of the rotors. Like I posted last, brakes and rotors next. Until then, the saga continues.......:)

Mine did that. Check your Universal joints. Block the wheels, stick the truck in neutral and twist on the drive shaft. My U- joints were dust. after replacing them with new ones (With Grease zerks) the shake went away 100%

I had this same issue steering vibe issue, rotated wheels recently and now its gone, makes me think bent rim or something, probably rides better on the solid axle then the ifs or other way around!

mine does that too but its probly cause of damage to the front end when the floor mat stuck the gas pedal to the floor and we wrecked. Replaced everything just recently and have 33" tires also, problem lessened to where its not so embarassing.

That is true, some tires do take a set.

Most noticeably in the cooler / winter weather climates.

Holds true with stiffer, sport oriented tires on the car as well.

    *****************************************************************************

Good prior posts on balancing within this thread... I've noticed that not many of our local independent tire shops use the stud alignment balance (haweka) kit.

None yet, but sure to come!
Ok gang... I have read through every single post on here and I believe I have a slightly different issue, but definately related.

First, the set up.... KMC XD series wheels (stock size) and Mich AT/2 tires, also stock size, ProComp lugnuts. Purchased the wheels and lugnuts at 4wheelparts.com and tires at local Costco. The hubcentric rings that came with the wheels did not fit my Tacoma and the tech said that the wheel hub actually fits pretty snugly on the truck hub... 4wheelparts.com insist they should be mounted lugcentric, so between the two I am assuming this is correct.

I too had the steering wheel shake which was particularly bad from 60-70MPH, and even worse on cold mornings. I have had the wheels balanced no less than 6 times (lifetime balancing at Costco). Finally it seems that we have the shaking taken care of.

Now the more mysterious issue.... as I drive down the road, it feels like I have a big rock caught in my tire. Not a shake, but more of an subtle thumping vibration. We have checked the tires over and there is no indication of damage to the tires, they still look brand new. I have noticed this on a variety of roads, including one that is newly resurfaced, so it doesnt appear to be natural road vibration. It is noticably a consistent thudding.... again, not jarring, just a subtle thud, thud, thud. None the less, it is annoying and I am OCD as hell about squeeks, rattles, etc... so now it is driving me insane.

    Any thoughts?

Hmmm... interesting. How much weight did the final balancing of your wheels, per rim and tire combo yield?

    Have you checked tire runout?

I had a similar issue with my wife's vehicle a couple years back. Not a shake per-say, but the "bump" ... without the grind. :p

Fairly straight forward to check while mounted on the spin balancer, but as easy with a floor jack and jack stands. Here's what we did and what was found...

Lift your vehicle up so the tire can spin freely. Place a tangible reference point close to, but not touching the tire in such a location to allow easy viewing. We used a wheel chock turned point up near the tire tread surface closest to the sidewall to create a control location.

Now spin the wheel rapidly, (by hand is the safest method), while watching the air gap between the tire and the (wheel chock in our experiment), reference point, searching for up and down deviation.

We were able to locate a flawed tire in this manner... one having no tread wear issues, no broken belts or similar flaws, but one that was cast out of round, resulting in a similar "bump bump bump" resonation while driving down the roadway.

Replaced that tire and smooooth sailing its been ever since.

    Might be worth a look.

Have you rotated the tires around to make sure it's not a rear tire out of balance? In other words, you say the steering shake is gone. So that tells me the two FRONT tires are balanced correctly. What about the rears? If you put them on the front, is there still no steering shake? That might be the first test. Swap the tires and verify the current rears are balanced perfectly too.

I had the same thing on some new Pep Boys tires, two of them were way out of round, the third was a little better and only one tire out of the 4 was actually "round". I had already gotten my refund for the 4th tire and demanded they take them back and give me my money back, they did. That good tire, new taller size, 75 instead of 70, is now my spare. I got some Hankook 265/75/16's and it took three times there at Discount Tire to get them balanced correctly but now it is smooth as silk as it should be. Road force balance twice did not do it but the third time they used a brand new laser balancer and it told them to move the tire on the rim. Rides great now, no thump, thump and no steering wheel shake, at least up to 90 MPH. :D

Tire is "out of round". If a tire is driven out of ballance for a while it will start to wear one side of the tire more than another. This will cause the wheel to kinda bounce in a way causing this "rock in the tire feeling". This happened to me recently. You can tell if it is out of round by how much weight is put on the wheel on one side to get them balanced.
When I had this one tire on the front, I had very bad stearing wheel vibration.

I had that problem it turned out to be that the routers on the front were ever so slightly warped from over heating so if all else fails try that.

IMHO and from My experiences I had a shake between 55 and 65. It was my Universal joints.
I "BLOCKED THE WHEELS", do that. then stuck the Taco in neutral and grabbed the drive shaft. # 2 by the carrier was out, I mean dusted. I replaced all 3 with extreame duty joints with zerks. Total for all 3.
about $48. $$ well spent. grease them every 6000 mi. Lifetime warranty too.

If it shakes only when you brake, your front rotors are warped.

If it shakes, the faster you go, it's wheel balance.

Remember too, wheel spacers put big load on your wheel bearings. Keep em greased.
