Preparing for reassembly. My mating surfaces have a fair amount of corrosion... is there any need to go at it with sandpaper finer than 120 grit? Seems like the scratches left may be no worse than the original milling marks, but not sure.

All values I mentioned were from the 2005+ Tacoma FSM and not from an older version that you are referencing to.

So reading this, I get the impression Toyota diffs just kinda spontaneously explode??? I mean some of you are on your 3rd-4th one????

I've had Ford 7.5's, 8.8's, Dana 30's, 35's, 44's, I've never fragged a R/P, EVER, and I've done some ridiculous motorsports stunts. I guess if I wheel my taco, this will be inevitable, regardless of preventative maintenance etc? Not trying to troll this up, by my mind is blown and I'm baffled. Excuse the noob deer in the headlights confusion. I thought Toyota diff's, especially the 8" were regarded as "good" for a factory diff?? Maybe I'll swap a Dana 35 in mine once she blows o_O

edit: I fragged a full case Detroit in my Dana 44 TJ, and the R/P lived, fragged a Powertrax in it before that, still same R/P....

Better sell your Tacoma. Your diff will explode!

To answer my own question, scratches from 120 grit do not affect the sealing (on my install <- disclaimer). No leakage yet.

Install an ARB air locker in your sport. That's what's in mine.

and make sure you remember to remove the stub shaft :anonymous:
helps if you're not doing the work at your ex's and look at it saying yep, need to move that over, and then get a call from ecgs a week later saying you left it in the old one. good thing you have a break in period and need to at least change the oil after a few hundred miles.
