So a few months ago I heard 2 loud pings, I had just done the ecgs bushing a few days prior and thought maybe something had popped into place as I was doing a hard right turn really slow on dirt. Now I'm wondering if I broke something in the rear. Would there be any other signs if I broke a gear?

Anyone have a response for this? I was careful but as soon as I pulled the drivers side the same thing happen for me. I’m curious if I damaged a seal. Hard to tell now since it was wet if there is a leak or not. Will keep an eye but want to fix it if so.

That seal is keeping the oil from cavity that the abs sensor goes into. If there was no excessive amount of oil in that cavity or on the sensor your seal is still good. But you will get some oil dripping in there from pulling the axle out.

Ok, thanks! I’ll keep an eye out some excess came out when I pulled it out so it looks like it’s keaning but have not seen excess after install. It didn’t do it in the other side so it was concerning. I’ll continue with breaking and keep an eye out.

I always use RTV. It's easier to just put a fat bead down and reassemble. I've done five between my two trucks and have had no issues.

The step on manually locking the diff before removal, how much force or how far does that fork has to move? I was only able to shift it about 1/4" left or right. I'm afraid of forcing it too much and might chip the gear.

Thank you for this great write up @MonkeyProof ! This thread was super helpful and an amazing reference.

Knocked this swap out last night thanks to the help from @Dalandser :burnrubber:

Maybe a note you can add is to remove the 27MM sensor nut and transfer it over to the new 3rd member. @locster Swapped 3rds with me and almost took off without removing his haha.

    Fantastic write-up.

I will admit that it took me 2 days of on and off working but that was primarily due to the cold and wind and small garage. I'm not a young man so I am not as strong as I use to be nor fast. But it did take me about 2 hours to put it all back together. The only issue/concern I have was the stretching of the brake line when you pull the axles out. I didn't notice how much I deformed my brake lines until I was putting it all back together but in the grand scheme of things it was minor. If I ever had to do this again, I think it would take me about 5 hours of laying on the floor and wiggling around, you folks claiming to do it in an hour, you are supermen. I'm just waiting on the RTV to cure and tomorrow morning I'll fill the diff with oil and start the break-in period.

    Pro Tip!

Don't pull on the brake lines to hard when you're pulling the axles out. This is the third time I've changes one out and disaster struck! Noticed brake fluid dripping, thought a connection had just come loose, tightening everything up and bent the brake line back into position, went to bleed the brakes after I was done with the diff, and fluid is still leaking out, tried to band the brake line back into a straight position and this happened. I guess repeated bending of the brake line to pull the axle out wore down on the tubing at the connector and it finally said enough was enough.

Now I'm trying to find a replacement before I go to work tomorrow >_<

Go to Napa and get these in the length you need. They are made to bend by hand. I did a trail repair in death valley using them. i now keep a couple in my recovery box.

Hahah 2 hours to late, brother. Called my Tire/Automotive shop and they directed me to Napa. Already have the new one in place. Ended up picking up their little tube bender as well just to make it easier so I didn't accidentally kink a line. Looks like my speed bleeders are plugged or the check valves are seized, ended up ordered new ones after trying to blast air through them and clean them up and still nothing coming through. Brake doesn't go to the floor so I still have brakes but new speed bleeders should firm that up just fine. (I know there's fluid there since I can pop out the speed bleeders and have fluid come gushing out when the wife hits the pedal, but there's still a little air in the lines somewhere I need to pump out).
