Definitely more but I think for the most part either rear end will hold up okay. If the 8.4 really only has two spiders that's pretty weak though. I think most of the blown rings are stock, seems to not be an issue with aftermarket and I want to say my side gear was a fluke. I think you definitely improve your chances of breakage though.

I dunno I didn't say anything about the arb breaking or the axle shafts. They're 30 spline beef for sure.

I just wonder how beefy the side gear of the ARB is compared to the stock side gears. I also wonder how strong those stock 8.4s are after all if they only have two spiders. The e-locker 3rds have 4 spiders, they don't have the bigger bearings or truss but... still.

I understand the benefits of the "8.4" over the 8". I disagree that people break aftermarket gears more. I understand that the higher the ratio the "weaker" they become but go check the list of stock blown rear ends on TTORA. Not to mention the aftermarkets have a lot more material as they're thicker than the stock gears (which doesn't help with shearing teeth but does help with ring breakage). The ring gears are the same but the "8.4" uses bigger bearings and is ribbed and trussed better which helps with pinion deflection. Apparently it uses two spiders though. Which in my mind is fucking weak. I'd rather have the 8" unless you upgraded to the ARB which I believe your correct in that it has 4 spiders.

Not to mention I like the adjusting wheel to set carrier bearing preload instead of the shims. If I ever set one up that makes it easier IMO. As of now I've only built HD truck 3rds. Which tend to have adjusting wheels.

but uhh my whole point was that with only two spiders I don't think the "8.4" is as strong as people profess and IMO that puts it barely above an 8" maybe less with an aftermarket gear set in that 8". That's just my opinion though. Clearly 2 spiders weren't enough for him.

So i grenaded my rear diff and was quoted 450.00 for labor to install a new third member. After reading this, I bought a third member from East Coast Gear Supply (great customer support) and did the install myself. This write up saved me hundreds!! Follow the steps provided and you cant go wrong.

    Thanks a million MonkeyProof!! :D

Now for the ultimate question.... After you grenade an eLocker in a late model taco, why replace it with one of the same? :) I have an 8.4 with an ARB that now, has lasted longer than any of the many elockers before. Just saying. :)

It's alot easier and cheaper to swap in another 3rd than to swap in the whole housing with arb and new gears.

    IMO.

Hard to find housing as well.

When (if ever) I'm ready to swap it won't be to another 8"

Ha! Not that bad especially since someone will always buy the elocker at TW prices and the 'conversion is a simple bolt-in swap. The housing hard to find? It's only the most popular Toyota housing currently made. Found mine at the first boneyard I called. :)

    What's yours out of?

I'd assume you'd have to get it out of a 2nd gen taco or it'd be a different width, thus hard to find. No Tacoma parts around here. Though I do see them listed over the hill.

Seemed like a fair price and I hear good things about ECGS. I wanted to go with a bigger rear end and swap the gears to 4.10, however its not in the budget right now :(

Besides, I have to leave something to do next year!! :D

Model of INTEGRITY -----> Chase will get nothing but praise from me. He is a guy that has proven beyond belief... even if some haven't been fair with him, he has ALWAYS been fair and more willing to stand behind his work than anyone I've been exposed to in this biz... and I've been very exposed! lol

My goodness! Great write up. Manwithoutaplan recommended this form to me because I'm in the process of switching my 3.73 to a 4.10. My dad had told me how to do thisstep by step, which was pretty close to the way you did it, but yours comes with photos!! Haha And I don't have to bleed my brakes after. Very nice work!! I'm almost confident enough to do it myself. I saw someone post about how much it was going to cost before they found this form. Even with taking off my third n bringing it to yota masters, it's going to cost me like 350 for them to press my gears. Now I know that's something I should leave to someone who has experience with that kind of thing, but it is possible for myself to do it? Just curious
