My 2021 SR5 has issues reading USB drives with MP3's if it is larger than 4Gb.
(Yes I confirmed I am formatting with FAT32)
I went into the "Software Update" section and it tells me that there are no updates.
I have "Model ID DCU 19TDT1NA-EAPE" version 1600
    Is this the Latest version?

Likely yes, they are a tad confusing, but they let the public install them.

If you are due for a dealer visit, it's covered under warranty 3 years, so if it doesn't work out, just ask them to look at it.

Thank You, I just tried that site. After entering my VIN it tells me "There are curently no updates available for this multimedia unit".
Bummer. I was hoping to get Music on a USB drive.
I tried Formating on my Windows 10 Enterprise 20H2 and i Cannot get it to recognize the songs.
I downloaded a Format Utility from SanDisk and it says it is formatting as FAT32.
I added the music is several methods including Folder for Artist, a subfolder for Album, and in the Album folder the MP3 files.
I added 3 MP3's in the Root of the USB and it does not see any music.
I tried the "reorder" method that shows USB2. still not working.
If I use a 1 or 4gb USB drive it works great. but not an 8gb Sandisk Cruzer or 16gb SanDisk drive.
I guess I'm stuck with Bluetooth and Radio.
I called the Dealer Friday, that was interesting. It took a while to explain what USB was. but he promised to ask his sales manager to see if music can be put onto a USB drive. LOL.

Sounds like Toyota's sales staff is as knowledgable as their engineering staff on infotainment systems.

There is an update. The Toyota website is usually behind on which updates are the latest.

Go to my thread here and you'll see that the latest version (as of November) is 1785, not 1600.

Keep in mind, it does not appear to address your issue. But if you're like me and want to be updated, then go ahead and give it a shot. I updated my 2020 with no prior issues and have no issues after the update.

Haven't tried the USB stick, but I do use my old Video iPod (5g). I replaced the hard drive with two xD cards, and it hold 120 GB of tunes. My 2018's head unit controls it just fine via USB.

Do you have an old iPod lying around?

I followed your procedure (and Thank You for That!)
I upgraded from version 1600 to version 1785.
Unfortunately this did not help my situation, but now I'm up to date on the Head Unit Software.
I will try buying a different Brand of USB drive, maybe that is my issue

I have a 2014 and had the same problem. I had the latest update for my year. Very frustrating. Playing very very limited. A solution that worked for me was a little old time. My daughter had an old iPod Classic (160 Gig). It's battery was kind of shot, it would not hold a charge. It was near useless. I plugged it into the USB and it worked fine. I could play it anyway I wanted and all song were visible and playable. Nothing else ever worked right. The USB port kept it energized.
Ebay has a lot of older iPods (refurbished whatever that means) for a decent price, if you are interested. Hope this offers some help.

When performing the update I couldn’t get my flash drive to work, I ended up using a micro so card in the map slot and it updated perfectly.

If you go and get another usb drive, maybe get one that is usb 2.0 to see if that makes a difference; I've been using a 32GB mini memory drive for over a year with no problems.

    I resolved the Issue !!
After a bit of research I found the reason to be the "Partition Type"
There are two different types of partitions on any drive. MBR (Master Boot Record), or GPT (GUID Partition Table).
Windows 8, 10, and 11 by default use GPT. Once a Partition is Set it Stays that way until you change it.

This is how you can change it, but keep in mind that it "will" wipe any existing info on your USB Drive.
    Convert GPT to MBR partition
    1. Insert the USB Memory drive into your computer.
    2. Open an elevated command prompt by right clicking Command Prompt and then choosing "Run as Administrator"
    3. When your "DOS" Black background screen opens continue to step 4.
    4. Type diskpart.
5 At the DISKPART prompt type list disk. Example: List Disk
6 Notice you will see the partition of every existing Hard Disk on your Computer. Confirm the correct disk partition for your USB Drive.
Reread step 6, this is Very important! it should NEVER be "Disk 0" in my case it was "Disk 3"
    7. At the DISKPART prompt type select disk <disk number> Example: Select Disk 3
    8. At the DISKPART prompt type clean (This deletes all the USB Drive Contents).
    9. At the DISKPART prompt type convert mbr
***Now your Disk partition is MBR and NOT GPT.
10 At the DISKPART prompt type list disk. Notice the change from step 5.
Close the DOS Screen by clicking on the X at Top Right corner.
Format the USB Drive using FAT32 and then add your Music. Windows 10 and 11 DOES have the Option for FAT32.
    Test and it will work.

    Hope this helps someone.

Sir, you are a GENIUS! I just bought a new SR5, and couldn't get it to read a flash drive.
    Thanks,
    Tim

For anyone running into 3rd gen firmware update issues, I finally resolved my inability to update by formatting the USB drive with a Windows computer. For whatever reason, my MacOS format of FAT32 did not match the Windows format of FAT32. Weird! I also had to buy a subscription service through Toyota (Safety Connect), because the update menu said it couldn't do an update without it, even though the data was sitting on the USB drive. Weird again!

I also replaced the USB port on the dash (I was getting desperate).
