Stock 3rd gen tires.....how long are yours lasting?

The 110 and 91 are beat to hell

 

I'm just going to plug it an have a shop put this tire on my spare steel wheel.

 

I wanted to revisit this thread, I originally said they were good based on visual inspection but i am 7600 miles and they look thin compared to a buddy with 1k on his. i revisited the paperwork from my 5k checkup which was done at 4700 miles and i was down to 9/32s from the new 12/32s. ill be doing new tires in the spring at this rate.....

 

I'm at 9/32's with no issues so far. 11k miles on them - still good tread depth IMO but new tires will go on this fall for more tread depth for the passes come winter.

Have been on trails requiring 4LO for tops of 100 miles - and I treat the tires like I would treat any P rated tire off-road. With a lot of care. They are not a dedicated all-terrain and the reinforcing isn't a C or E rated ply.

My old Taco came with Rugged Trails and my FJ Cruiser came with Dunlops, so I consider these tires a massive improvement, but they aren't without flaws.

Back to the tire wear though - I'd ask for an alignment check. That doesn't sound right. Also look in your owners manual for the tire warranty from Goodyear - I believe it covers abnormal wear or defects and the tires are warranty'd for quite a long time. I rotate mine every 5k and notice about 4500 miles into a rotation I get more road noise in front that goes away when I swap them. Don't know what thats all about but I'm not a big fan of it.

 

I had the alignment checked and it was perfect. My service advisor they're seeing wear all over the place and he said it looks like i pulled a short straw.

 

Definitely pull that warranty paperwork out. I bought my truck before sitting on a plane for a few hours and so I read through my owners manual and all of the warranty packets slowly as I had nothing else to do. The warranty on the tires is pretty solid and covers premature wear. I don't want to spit out exact numbers as they may be wrong, but they listed certain wear time frames and numbers. They state in the warranty they will replace or give you a valuation towards a replacement set with the warranty that is pretty solid. They honored a warranty on a set of tires I put on my FJ Cruiser a few years back, so it isn't just a "fluff" warranty.

I figured them burning up is a good excuse for newer and bigger duratracs or KO2s???

 

My stock tires lasted 2k miles.









They were then removed and left to collect dust for the foreseeable future.

 

When I claimed my warranty they calculated how much use I got out of the tires and removed that from the overall cost of my original tires. They then let me put that remaining value towards any goodyear tire. They couldn't replace the tire that got a bubble in it because I had enough tire wear that they had to replace all 5. So lets say:

5 tires at $150 a piece = $650
I got 20% of the expected wear out of them before bubble shows up.
$650 @ 80% = $520

And thats an idea of what they put towards my new set of tires (I don't remember the actual figures). I also did some "buy 5 deal" at firestone and got lifetime balancing on the tires. I paid for installation - in hindsight they likely would have covered it but the shop I worked with did the warranty claim for me.

 

I have 18k miles (probably 1k of them offroad and 700-800 of those running low 15-18psi) and mine are getting pretty low (5-6/32), I was honestly only expecting 20-25k from them, its well known OEM tires suck and aren't even the same as retail tires of the same model. For example the BFGs that came on the old TRD ORs are NOT the same as the BFGs you buy on tirerack.com. Kind of a dirty little secret of the tire industry.

I've actually been happier than expected with their offroad performance and they did surprisingly well in snow/ice so overall I'm still pretty happy with them. Planning on replacing them at 25k miles with my favorite tires: Michelin LTX A/T2

 

I get 15-20k on a good set of tires, based on previous 1st & 2nd Gen Tacomas, 2 Mecedes GLK's wearing 17" Michelins, my lifted Wrangler etc. Lots of gravel/cinder roads with lava rock projections, steep cement strips with smoking spin uphill and downhill eats them up. After 20k they become susceptible to nails & cuts. If I change them on the early side, it saves a lot of drama.
My newest, Gen3 OR will get E range KO2s at 15k, or sooner if the original rubber starts to look wearing.

 

I'm at 13k miles... been wondering about the wranglers on my TRDOR life span so I can know when to have the funds ready for KO2's or similar. I was imagining i'll get 28-30K out of these wranglers.

Mine are in great shape, I live in mountains and regularly drive in the Pisgah nat'l forest's service roads which aren't always in good shape (weather and yearly budget dependent)

As for performance, I certainly drive on gravel and dirt roads but i dont go rock crawling... I pretty often encounter stream crossings, winter weather occasionally, mud and mud and mud which is usually red clay. These tires have been above acceptable in everything except the mud where they are just simply OK.

 

You aught to be able to get 30+ if it's mostly pavement and soft dirt.

 

Off topic - but can you PM me some decent roads or trails to check out in Pisgah? I'm not terribly far away.

 

UPDATE: took truck in for 10K checkup, 7/12th tread at 9708 miles. That's down 5/12th from factory.

 

I bought my truck used and it has 6k miles on it. What really got me the most mad was I didn't check the tire when I bought it. (one would think that the tires would be relatively new.). So I drive off and a few weeks later I decided to take a look at them and realize that they are worn...I mean, really worn. So I called the dealership and they said that's my own liability and ended up buying K02's for the truck.

I believe that whoever sold the truck swapped out tires with some old worn Toyo's.

 

Reviving this thread. My stock tires are looking like they will need replacement before 30K. At 26K now

 

It’s not wise to repair the sidewall of a tire...

 

In have 16K on the stock tires...they are over half worn....these are the shittiest tires I've ever had in 40 years of driving. .THEY SUCK on wet roads...hydroplane dangerously on slightly ponded surfaces. No other tire has ever performed this bad on the exact same conditions. I'll be replacing them before winter.

 

19K on mine and they are doing great. I have off-roaded many times in two years, only thing I haven’t done much of is mud.
