The main problem is the AUX input--it does not work well with any MP3 player I have--it needs way too much input power. One of these days I'll build or buy a preamp for it, but it shouldn't need one from the factory.

The only other deficiency I have found with mine (stock 09 access cab w/ subwoofer) is that it does not have the radio data system (does not display station ID, song, artist, weather, and traffic info).

I thought that was standard since about 2003-2004. Seems odd that a modern Toyota doesn't have it.

My radio was doing the usual unexpected on/off and reception issues. I finally got tired of waiting for the replacement and top cased my radio and discovered what I thought was the problem all along, cold or incomplete solder joints on the power/volume dial and the tuner dial. Seems for some reason, these are the only hand installed components on the PCB. So I removed the old solder, cleaned and re-solder the dials correctly.

While I was in there, I also did a complete LED change over to white leds. This was 62 LED's total. All back together and it came out great. No more problems with the radio.

Here is a oversize pic of the cold solder joints on the radio PCB.

Does anyone know if the stock head unit has preamp outs?

I just picked up a 2010 Access Cab w/the single deck CD and it's working OK (could use a higher input gain on the aux port but is usable with my mp3 walkman set to full volume and the vol setting in the 30s+), but I'm thinking about upgrading the speakers and adding a separate power amp with crossovers for the front components and wouldn't mind keeping the factory dash configuration.

Love my JBL unit, it has everything built in except navi, aux input is loud enough for me and the bluetooth works great! I do have the TSB with the amp, but the dealer has already ordered the part and will be changed out in a few weeks.

Have you had any issues since resoldering the wires? If not, you should post a thread about this fix. You could save a lot of people some headaches

No wires involved, just solder contact points. To answer your question, no I have not had anymore issues since re-soldering the cold joints correctly.

The "fix" for my paticular problem was re-soldering the cold solder joint as previously posted in the circle areas of the picture. I am not gonna yank my radio back apart to do a "soldering for dummies" write up. Plenty of other resources out there on how to solder. Only advice to give is to have a 25-35 watt soldering iron.

I have my factory radio sitting in a box in my garage, if anyone wants it, hit me up, I only had it in the truck for about a week. It is the black faced one, not the silver. I have the base model 4x4......

I guess I was more thinking that what you posted needed its own thread to make it more visible. But no big deal.

    Congrats on finding a fix.

I am not 100% certain what I have done for my particular radio is the "fix" for everybody that has had a crappy 09 radio. In all actuality, I would recommend most people to just get a warranty replacement.

Well, my 2010 Tacoma that I bought last year just started to have problems about a week or so ago. When I start the truck up it will work fine for the first 5-10 minutes on the road and then all of the sudden the audio starts skipping. If your familiar with DJ equipment, like If I was going up and down with the fader slider. The funny thing is when I accelerate from a stoplight it will go faster and if I slow down it will so down. Then all the sudden the audio goes away. The unit works except if I try to change the volume level its stuck on the number it was on before the audio went out. I'm still under warranty but hoping there is a quick fix I can do. If not, I'm just going to bring into the dealer. Here is a video that I made with my Iphone:

    http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b374/venomized/?action=view&current=b82a5112.mp4

This happens whether it's on SAT radio or regular radio channels or if I even plug in my Iphone for music.

sounds like either a loose connection or a defective HU, and the problems with the controls make it seem more like the latter.

Unless you're planing on upgrading to an aftermarket system soon, I'd say take it to the dealer and get it replaced under warranty
