Are the OEM tires unavailable for the Tacoma?

I took my 2WD 2009 SR5 Prerunner into Toyota of Clovis for new tires Wednesday. I told them to put on the same exact tires. Factory stock tires.

When I got the truck back it had the 265-65R17 Bridgestone Dueler HT 840's on it, but the stock tire is the HT 685-II.

The 840 is clearly a physically smaller tire, though it caries the same size numbers, and it has 1 1/2" less tread width which is visible even to the casual observer. They both have a B traction rating, but the traction of the 840 is far less. Traction control barely kicks in, they loose grip so suddenly.

Accounting for the fact that they are brand new tires, they still suck.

Nobody called to tell me they were substituting tires. No one asked permission. I think they just threw whatever they had on there assuming I wouldn't care or wouldn't know.

I knew as soon as I saw the truck. The tires don't even look like the same brand they are so different.

Of course the dealer tried to convince me they were the same, so my respect for them dropped a couple notches at that point.

Now they seem to be having trouble finding tires for me. Or maybe they're just stalling me so they can tell me, "These tires have x-miles on them. We can't take them back now." They better not try that crap.

I spend 99.9% of my time in town or on the highway, on level flat pavement & it hasn't rained here in 5 years. Snow is unknown here. I don't take this truck in the dirt ever.

So assuming they can't get the 685-II, what tires should I put on this?

We'll see what the dealer comes up with. Toyota of Clovis was always a pretty good dealer, then they were bought out by Penske. They beautified the building and showroom, but the service appears to be going to hell.

Never heard of a 685. D684 II is what was on my sport originally.

Call a Discount Tire and ask for that specific tire and size. If it's discontinued, their system will say so.

BTW, the dealer replaced the tires and gave me the October $1 tire sale price, so I got a $208 rebate on my bill.

I get the feeling they want my business.

WHY WOULD YOU WANT THE STOCK TIRES???

Go on any used site and find multiple people trying to sell brand new stock tires pulled off a new tacoma.

I sold mine for 300. Couldn't believe I got that much.

Right! I'm on my 5th new vehicle and have yet to be impressed/satisfied with any of the oem tires the vehicles came with.

I don't understand. There are much better tires out there for most truck uses. Before spending your money, I recommend researching the many other tires out there that provide much better performance.

Not everybody has a bad experience with their stock tires, and TW isn't a very good cross section of Tacoma owners.

Pretty sure OP knows what he wants, and it's his truck and his money. I'd buy the same stock tires again, I've had zero issues or complaints with them. Different strokes, folks.

Not everybody has to have Duratracs.
