Does anybody have an explanation on what is wrong?

Does your steering wheel shake when slowing down? I have heard similar noises before come from floating calipers when the rotor is warped bad enough. In the case of a floating caliper, the caliper flexes back and forth on the slides following the warp and it makes a groaning noise. Ours are fixed calipers though. U-joint can make noise when dry but it is usually higher in frequency.

No it doesn't shake and it has been coming and going for about a month now.

Well I guess it couldn't hurt to grease the u joints whether that's the issue or not.
