Is there supposed to be a gasket for the engine oil drain plug?

I think the engine rebuilder left it off at the 500 mi oil change.
Either that or it fell into the old oil when I changed it this weekend.
    D'oh!
I have a slow drip drip drip going on now when it never happened before this weekend.

Has anyone ever installed one of those drain "valve" do-hickeys ? Are they any good?

Im sure they serve their purpose but the 3 or 4 turns of a wrench to take out the plug is easy enough for me. Plus i dont have to worry about it being knocked off.

I installed a drain valve do hickey and extension on a westerbeke 4107 diesel when the engine was out of my sailboat because the drain was inaccesible and you had to suction pump the oil out through the dipstick tube. Not reccomended for off road use.

I have used the original oil plug gasket for 13 years and still hasn't leaked a dropped.
