Hi all. I have been trying to hook up this stupid vss wire in my 07 Tacoma . I am getting confused on where to install the wire. I'm aware it's at the ecm and something else beging coin tray. I have tried both locations and don't get anything on my head unit. When I connect to the black connector beging coin tray, I get p0500 error when I connect to ecm, I get weird lights on the dash. I can completely confused and frustrated. I have searched and searched, but can't really get an answer. Please help if you can. Thank you. I have an 07 base, access cab.

Might help if you mention where you got the idea for this mod. Maybe a TW thread?

Fixed it! It was the purple and white wire right behind the coin tray. I think my problem was the harness wire was connected to the vss wire of the radio, which went somewhere. I dunno. But I cut that wire and made direct connection from radio harness to plug behind coin tray. Worked perfectly. No more weird stuff going on. Thanks all for the replies

I had to google VSS to know what that stood for. That's where I found that link. Now that I know what it stands for, I still don't know what it does. Back in the day I had a few Chevy's that had speed controlled volume. The volume would get a little louder as you picked up speed and drop as you slowed down. Is this the same thing? Never really noticed any volume change with my 07.

Glad you got it figuered out. That can be so frustrating.

I totally wish my radio would change with my speed, but this is more for the GPS and gauges that display my rpm and speed in the head unit. The GPS will be more accurate because it will know my speed, along with the GPS coordinates, it can calculate all the better.

doesnt the maestro rr hook up to the OBD2, then reads all that from the canbus stream ?

I have the obd connection hooked up. The GPS still asked for the stupid vss wire to be attached. I guess it should be able to read the speed from the obd port adapter.

I have my gauges set up on my kenwood with the maestro interface just using the OBDII PID's, speed ect work just fine

what head unit are you installing? from what I know this vss wire is "optional", only used during nav if gps signal is lost.

i have a pioneer avic 8500. Originally, i had it hooked up with a regular metra kit and no vss wire. no maestro. no steering wheel controls. I then added steering wheel controls. (swapped out airbag and bought Chinese controls. To get the Steering wheel controls to work, i had to upgrade to the maestro RR and a T01 harness. hooked it all up , this time connecting the VSS wire from the radio harness to the Maestro harness. ( figured it may get speed info from OBD connector.) didn't work for me. i possibly could have had something mixed up as im not a radio guy, but i then tried piggybacking the VSS wire from the two areas mentioned, to the harness, but that created errors. i then chopped the vss wire in the harness so it would be a direct connection from plug behind coin tray to the radio harness's VSS wire. it worked instantly!

yes the VSS wire is optional, but i definitely noticed an improvement in gps location. i think it reads my car speed with the gps speed and calculates better. i dont know if this is in fact true, but i do notice a slight improvement in the gps.

Your '07 didn't or doesn't have the overhead compass? Because you cut the feed for it.
