Carnage pics from OCT 20 AOAA Meet Up.

A few scuffs and scratches on the Leer Cap. But my DIY Lexan window held strong.

Fender/bedside panel trim loosened up a bit...

... from a failed clear packing tape fix from three years ago. I’ll use a higher quality Clear Gorilla tape to fix this go round. Hopefully will last 5 years.

Don’t do this! Fricking heat shrink tubing will melt from the heat of the winch drum during hard use.

    I’m gonna edit my post.

So you're idea failed huh. Well at least you tested it. I think the thing I posted won't let you go past that 8 wraps looking at how it works. I would think that taking some marking paint and putting a tag on you're line may work how you were hoping the heat shrink would.

Yup. I didn’t think it all the way through. I pulled off the winch line yesterday to wash it and found a bunch of melted plastic.

Tried that. Sharpie won’t work on synthetic line. Tried paint as well.

Not too worried about this. I pretty much know the length of my line by experience.

Floyd, do you do a lot of powered unspooling of the line vs releasing the clutch and free spoiling the line out. I’m not sure how your winch works but I was under the understanding that the drum gets hot because of the brakes, and the brakes only function when you are spooling out under power. They work similar to pedaling backwards on a single speed bike.

Maybe it’s from heat from the motor then

I’ve been doing a lot of short, but heavy pulls this year. I think that makes the motor work a little harder. The winch is a lot more efficient when it’s pulling with less wraps in the drum. The more wraps on the drum, the harder the motor has to work, the more heat is generated. At least that’s my theory for the meltdown.

Plus, I don’t think the heat shrink needs much heat to melt.

I’m not on my laptop, and my brain is fried. I believe I have a power point explaining why the melt happens, I think it’s more so the friction caused by tension. Don’t listen to that until I verify it. (I haven’t taught a winch course in probably a year now)

Suggestion: what about t-shirt tye dye kit? I’d recommend trying this on an old synthetic line.

Keep in mind also that winch design can also play a part. Newer winches designed for use with synth line have the brake outboard of the drum, whilst older designs for steel cable usually have the brake inside the drum.
