I have the same code key for my 2012 Taco. Bought with only 1 key and 1 fob. Bought 2nd key and fob. Fob is programmed. Now getting ready to order the cable. Have been emailed a link for techstream. Hope I share in the success. Someone said ACE HARDWARE was reasonable on key programming. Going to call them in the morning before order my cable. If they cut and program under $80 I will prob let them do it for convenience sake.

I tried the cable and pirated techstream with no luck. A local locksmith who cut my key said they would try to program it for $25, if successful another $100. I ended up finding a local TW member who had techstream and they programmed it in 5 minutes for a 6 pack

Yes I have been looking for a local with techstream but no luck yet. I even posted it on craigslist. I only have 1 original key, that is very worn, so I am a little paranoid without a spare. Just found out Ace Hardware does not do g chip keys.

Why was this all so easy on my '14 base model? I guess I don't have the chip in my key.

The truck came to us with only 1 original key and no remotes. I got a duplicate key cut for $5 and it is just a plain metal key with no plastic parts. Ordered 2 remote fobs off Amazon, and one flip-key remote shell off eBay. Got everything working lickety-split by using that trick where you turn the key off and on, open and close the door, yadda yadda.

My only real problem is the other keys in my pocket seem to press the buttons on the flip out key remote fob. So this results in the truck accidentally locking and unlocking itself when I bend down to tie my shoe or some such thing.

Well I think I just got lucky. Locksmith wanted $40 to cut and program my ebay key with no warranty. They made several attempts and could not cut it to open door or turn ignition. No start. No program. No charge. So I paid $100 for a new key cut and programmed. They made a non chip key to check the cut before wasting a chip key. So I walked out with my ebay key cut only, a door only key and a new chip programmed key for $100 even. Being a machinist I figured I would measure and compare the ebay key to the original and new programmed keys. Only difference was the cut started 0.030" earlier, or closer to the end, on the ebay key than the others. I put it in the door and pulled it out 1/32". Opened the door. I put it in the ignition. Pulled it out 1/32". Turned the ignition and STARTED THE TRUCK. They did not program the ebay key. Why does it work. I don't care why. All I know is for $100 I have 2 new chipped keys that work plus a door only key. With the locksmith keys, the ebay key and new fob I am out a total of $117. The cheapest local dealer wanted $120 plus tax for 1 new key cut and programmed. It's like winning on a scratch lottery ticket.

I would retry your ebay key with the other keys not nearby or in the car. Your new chipped/programmed key could have allowed the ebay key to work just by being nearby. It would probably allow your door only key to start the truck as well.

But at least you got one fully working key!

I did wonder about that. I will try it without any other keys in the area. Just knowing it turns the ignition helps because now it is worth programming. If it cost $40 more it is still worth it to me. With several vehicles and 2 separate carry key rings any extra keys are welcome. Thanks for the tip. Will find out soon. The goal was 2 working keys plus 2 fobs and a hidden door key. At the very least I accomplished that.

Well I left all keys in the garage in the back yard. Went to the truck in the front yard 90 feet away. Put ebay key in and it started right up. Now can you explain that. This key was in my pocket when they were out front programming the one single key to my truck. I am quite baffled.

YOU MY FRIEND, ARE A BAD A$$!!!

This is exactly what I was asking and looking for. I Don't have enough time for a detailed reading. But would like to know what information is necessary for different years. E.g., is there is a difference from one year to another where the chip code or type is involved. Or would this setup work with all 2nd gen Tacos? My truck is a 2012 is everything the same as your 15?

And is one key manufacture known to make a better quality offering than another that you know of. I ask this in response to the reply post regarding the remote range from one to the other.

I think as long as you have a "G" key you are good to go

    20210916_130750.jpg

The techsteam deal didn't work for me but I used this forum and found someone with techstream nearby and had it programmed in less than 2 minutes. Only cost me a 6 pack and the flip key. I used the same link that is on post #1 and it's been fine for awhile now.

Forgive me if this has been covered as I have not read through all of the back and forth exchange. But I, like I'm guessing many, am a bit hesatent where the software and chip programming is concerned.

Is it feasible to buy the new key fobs, have them cut properly, and then have a Toyota dealer program the chip for your truck?

You can get it done cheaper at a locksmith. They have techstream, or something very similar and cheaper, too.

The link for the key and fob purchase you posted still shows out of stock. Here's hoping the one below works and is of good quality. As I have just ordered two of them to kick off the effort. Please let me know if the ad sets off any alarms etc....

I have found many are just Cases or Shells. The way this one reads and by all indications, it is complete and ready to be cut and programmed, etc.

Wait before using this, The very last line through all the information is KEY SHELL. I have written the guy but most likely this is bait and switch. I'll update soon, crap dishonest Bastageses ruin everything.

Well the sun will comeout tomorrow, this is the sellers reply to my inquirie.

this is a full remote key, with circuit board and chip inside.
must be sure if your old remote key has the same buttons, FCC ID and chip as the remote before upgraded in the main picture and description before programming. if you don't know your original old remote key information, please use your VIN code to ask your car dealer for your old remote key information before programming. thank you

In my area I googled locksmiths near me. I found 5 immediately that do it so I then shopped prices.

I suggest trying to find someone close by that has techstream in stead of buying and trying to install a pirated version that's mention several times on this thread.

I found someone close by using tacomaworld regional discussion thread. It was worth the 30 minute drive

@FlamingTacoBro I like this option the best. Did you end up getting this to fully work? Thanks!
