    Maybe try catakleen or BG44k.
I know for a fact BG44k removes carbon from piston crowns.
My obd also shows better cat temps after using BG44k.
The cats need to be 1200 degrees to become a catalyst.
More rpms may also help to burn off deposits.

Clogged catalytic converters typically aren't cleaned, they're replaced. Once a cat gets clogged the exhaust is able to superheat the catalysts inside, melting/fusing them together and creating a more significant blockage. There is no saving it; it must be replaced.

As others said, there's no saving the cat.

What's the actual code? "Catalyst efficiency below threshold"? You can get "spark plug anti-fouler" fittings at some auto parts stores. Use them to space out the rear O2 sensors away from the exhaust stream. This will buy your friend some time.

If you live somewhere without smog testing you can get cheaper aftermarket cats, but they don't last nearly as long as OEM ones do.

OP, providing the honeycomb is not broken or the cat otherwise damaged the cats can often be cleaned using common chemicals. But you got to use the RIGHT STUFF. This is one of the best DIY out there to save a bunch of $$$$ but is not well known. See this thread and also my Post #31 onward in that thread for the specific mix:
