It's a game changer. The control you have is amazing with 4.7/2.56

First little shakedown was a success! Other than my front elocker motor not engaging but gonna tear into that tomorrow.

Crawling with the duals is a whole other planet.

I pretty much only use the 4.7. I find it the perfect gearing for most things and use double low for anything super technical. But my rear case is 4.7 so not much stress on anything from it.

Yeah I'm a little sketched out about running just my front case in low. I can see when I'm in double low people I'm wheeling with getting upset at how fucking slow I'm going :D

That's what I've heard from most people. A good friend of mine had duals and ended up going with a single case setup because he almost never used the double-low.

I ended up going with a single case too...but I see an auto tranny swap in my future too :)

Wyatt debunked that myth many years ago. Tons of people wheeling with the 4.7 in the front case without any issues. You will be fine.

And yes...people will hate you for slowing everybody down on the trails lol

Truck looks great by the way. It looks like 40"s on that pic :D

Im an auto so that changes things a little. Always wanted a manual till I went rock crawling and dont regret the auto at all.

Double low is ridiculously slow but makes climbing vertical walls without ever touching the skinny pedal makes it all worth it haha

    I beg to differ :luvya:

I blew apart two crawl boxes in my 02 Tundra with the stock rear case, 1 tons, on 37s, and that was with 2.28 in the crawl box. The power and weight from the 1st gen Tundras and the 2nd gen Tacomas is about the same too.

But, I had the Inchrowm setup, which I think is light-years behind the Marlin setup.

I think Wyatt debunked the myth only for the 4.7 gear set; which apparently is way stronger than the 2.28 :D

makes sense, even though the 4.7's put way more stress on the stock case behind it, which he proved to be strong as hell. I only destroyed one of those on my Tundra.

    Stuff. Also things.
Hey man, since this will be me at some point, is there a typical failure mode for this? Anything to avoid or watch out for?

I've now seen that it's a problem, it isn't a problem, it's only a problem if you run 2.2x in the crawler, it's only a problem if you run 4.7 in the crawler, blah blah blah...

Thanks! Slowly working through your build, btw.

His wasn't a failure related to extra torque from the 4.7's. It was rust and fretting in the coupler from the crawler to the chain case caused by putting them together without any anti-seize or high molly grease. It stripped the chain drive input and coupler on the street actually.

I lathered mine in anti-seize and it's been good for the last two years. Just dropped my oil last night and it looked perfect still.

Use to be a problem with the double row bearing using a fill slot.

Something would happen, and a few ball bearings would fall out of that slot and grenade.

@Jimmynolife not sure if you checked that out or not, would be curious to see if any changes with Marlins new adapter.

@jubei777 Check out that same thing, post a few pics in the crawlbox bs thread since yours is not assembled, if you don't mind. ;)

@Snowy had a good synopsis, i also think the supershort input of the chain drive case was a contributing factor (cue wyatt ranting LOL). The crawl box due to its design (all of them) have a bit of wobble to them because they only have a true bearing on one end. The total spline input and double row bearing helps mitigate this in the early crawl boxes. The chain drive case has an input less than half the length of the early cases which does not go as deep into the coupler. Once the splines start wearing, they corrode, wear more, corrode more until it strips out. From my research, not evrey case has this problem, includeing the early designs, and anti seize seems to prevent it. No matter what, change your fluid evrey 6months or year and if it starts truning red, drop the cases and inspect the splines.

Mine striped out almost 1 yr to the day after i installed it, 2weeks before going on a week long wheeling trip. I installed it dry. I ran another chain drive case for a year or so after before building my lefty and the splines looked good, so it may just be a crap shoot. Now i carry a spare 23spline input and coupler so that way it if blows up in the boonies, ill at least have the parts to cobble it back together and drive home. The coupler stripping led me to build a lefty, in retrospect i should have just bought an atlas but i was scared to do the floor mods. Now i have just enough confidence to be dnagerous, so if my current setup blows, atlas here i come!

As for the ball bearing deal, i never had that problem.

Would be curious to hear what changes are in this new generation of crawl boxes.

I have heard they changed the design of the plates, increased oiling capacity, etc. But what about the bearing issues?

There always seems to be a lot of secrecy around these things lol

Meh i have heard his rants a few times about it, i talked to jim when he was running inchworm and some dudes at marlin about it back in 2008-10.

We will have to read stories about him dd it 40k miles a year and wheeling it on the moon without problems and about how i should have bought an fj case....

@1999RegCab I have a 2.28 crawl box, mc07, and a lefty with 4.7s stuffed with all kinds of marlin 30spline chromo parts.
