Well, you can either buy an engine and swap it to the truck and throw the s/c back on.

Or get the engine rebuilt, unless it's something "simple" like a head gasket or something.

Did he say why? Not much we can help you with without a bit of information. Engines can go for a various amount of reasons.

If all you do is replace the engine and use the existing wire harness and ecu then why not?

How many miles are on the supercharger? If the supercharger has been on 'from the factory' (technically, they didn't come on from the factory but they could be dealer-installed)...then that thing is LONG overdue for a rebuild at 230,000 miles, assuming it hasn't been rebuilt already.

TRD recommends rebuilding the supercharger around every 100k miles so technically it should have been rebuilt twice by now. If it hasn't, then now would be a good time while you're getting a new motor put in.

Best bet is to get it rebuilt regardless.

Yeah I'd get it rebuilt then, better to be safe than sorry and it's safe to assume it's got close to (if not the same) number of miles as the original engine has.

Not totally sure on the cost but I think it's around $700 - $1k for a complete supercharger rebuild, if you get it shipped off and done by a proper shop.

Some guys on here have ordered the parts and done it themselves, doesn't look too difficult if you have the right tools. If you type in 'supercharger rebuild' in the search function up top I'm sure there are several threads on it

No problem. After a brief search of 3.4 s/c rebuilds, and of which I'm now an expert in, I would say becareful regardless of doing it yourself (which parts you buy) or sending it out (who you have do it, as well as what parts they use). This site, as well as hundreds of others I'm sure, can help you.

My mind is blown right now that you have a s/c v6 regular cab. That must be freakin nuts.

Definitely a fun truck to have, very nibble and easy to get down those small trails and even more fun after passing up a 2017, 35,000.00 dollar pro tacoma truck at 11,000 feet over vail pass with easy over the weekend as it struggled to try and keep pace. (I know he was saying to himself, WTF).
The 3.4 when supercharged and 2.1 pulley matched with a 5speed is a tough compo to beat even with today's standards even though its a 20 year old setup. The sc 3.4 puts out more hp (300hp) than the new pro Tacoma trucks (265hp)and the 1st gen Tacoma weight Is a lot less.(1000 pounds less)
It's too bad TRD dropped the supercharger and has no plans for making a supercharger for the new Tacoma trucks,
If you need any advice or help I've been there and done it with this swap and rebuild process
Supercharging is the the way to go with these 3.4 motors and. 5 speed if possible,
will feel like a completely different truck

Bought her new in 97,not too many if these left out there so I take extra good care
of her let alone 508,000 miles on the odometer.
