What if I told you the internals are forged, minus the pistons, and it’s a closed deck cast iron block. Doesn’t that give you a little bit of temptation?

oh how I miss mine! I had two 03’s. One was a 10th anniversary. Funny to think how 390 was crazy horsepower back in 03/04, right!? Not that many of them are still at that power level! I spent many nights messing with those cars

I appreciate all of the feedback. I've always loved Toyota trucks. My grandpa had an old 79' steel body that ran almost a half a million miles, so I know they're solid. I can't help but mention the 2.2 ecotec motors I've seen run over 500hp. Albiet, they were built motors. Theses I4's have a cast iron block too so it seems like they are just asking for forged internals to run higher boost. Idk. Here's a stock boosted motor:https://youtu.be/qwFGKwdkdHg

    Get your money back?

We’re all still talking about forcing air through the blowholes of a fundamentally neutered v6 built for mpgs on a utility truck right? I mean... the fact that this even has to be dialed back that far to showcase the levels of stupidity...

I don’t think think I’d turbo or supercharge mine even if someone offered me one of those for free.

I specifically bought the 2.7 because of how overbuilt and underpowered it is - can rev that fucker up and have faith nothing will happen over thousands and thousands of miles. I don’t rape it, but I’m not soft on it whatsoever routinely shifting at 3.5-4K rpm.

I know, doesn’t answer your question, just want ya to realize what you have under the hood is such an awesome peace of mind that may change if you introduce forced induction.

    would be interesting though!

A $5000 add on? Put the money towards an engine swap.

I'm installing LC Engineering Headers to give the cylinder head equal flow, and 4.88 gears to correct the overdrive issue with the trans. Maybe I will be happy there. I'm not looking for a race truck, just something a little more fun to drive while maintaining the reliability.

I totally understand your points, but I love boosted anything, snowmobiles or bikes to big diesels. The whine or whistle is almost as addictive as the extra power. To me, seeing a little pick-up truck beat any type of ‘muscle car’ is just good TV. Ever see the ‘Push Lawnmower with Twin Turbos’ or the ‘Turbo Wood Stove’? So awesome, look them up.

When I saw the $5k price tag of this supercharger kit I thought it was expensive too....but then I realized there are plenty of people here spending much more than that on their suspensions alone. Realistically, you won’t get your money back from suspensions or boosting anything (I4’s or V6’s) so I say if you’ve got the extra money and it makes you happy, go for it..

I have 4.88s, it it’s still gonna be slow. It just won’t bog down as much since you’ll be at a higher rpm and at a better place in the power band.

I get it and I agree to an extent. I own a supercharged Cobra (that I added the supercharger to) right now and will be trading my current zr6000 RR in on an Turbo SRX or Thundercat in a few years. I like me some boost too.

I know you don't get your money back on mods but the cost of upgrading to the V6 you'd be able to get a lot of that back on resale. It's my opinion but I'd rather have a factory engineered and installed V6 than adding an aftermarket supercharged to the 4 only to get me to the V6 level.

That's the great thing about these trucks. You have options... what works for me doesn't work for others. A lot of the stuff I see done here I think looks like shit but it's their truck so I don't give a fuck.

I've got the same issue as most that have the 6 speed auto where it will hunt for gears dropping from 6th to 4th pretty easy and sometimes not even be in 6th on the freeway. I'm hoping to have the ability to save a little gas by not having to apply much petal, but have the pep when I do want to apply it, and correct the overdrive issue. I'm thinking 5.29's will have the motor at an uncomfortable rpm on highway trips (2284rpm@70 & 2610rpm@80)and drink more gas. I know that's another thread but maybe I can get some feedback on an application of the modifications I am considering, ie; lighter wheels, equal length primary's, 4.88 or 5.29 gear and be happy with it as a good little dd as opposed to boosting.

The most desirable Toyota pickup ever built is a 22r-the turbo 4 cylinder. I’d very much like to have a boosted 2.7, but I can’t afford it.

I just read about that motor on an 86 model still running strong. My thinking was if I had a reliable motor that was capable of good gas mileage when I drove it normal, the power adder and slight increase in hearing to correct the transmission gearing would actually give me the ability to have an even more economical truck when I want it, but a little more pep when I wanted that. Plus I saw URD has an option to finance with Affirm so the financial part wouldn't be so bad if you bought it on time.

I think that’s the general idea for the all the small boosted motors in cars these days.

I can promise you this. Your MPGs will drop significantly with the blower. The boost will be addicting and you'll be in it all the time just for the fuck of it.

I hear you man. But to know I have the ability on both sides of the spectrum is nice.

Now you're just trying to come up with practical reasons for boost. This will never be a practical use of money in any way. You don't need to justify anything to anybody. If you really want to do it and can afford it, go for it. Only you can determine if you'll get enough enjoyment out of it to make the cost worthwhile.

Well said. I've wanted a Tacoma for a long time. Now that I got one I could afford I want to make it better.
