women were trying but sitting on shoulder and not making many of the drops. Set back Womens Big Wave surfing if you ask me.

Its a BIG Wave tour so let them surf BIG waves. Billy Kemper said it best and was ready to go.

It was absolutely bombing the whole coast of Maui and Peahi zone was a nightmare traffic wise.

100% agree. Women were out of their league. Not a bad thing. But reality. They wasted 3 hours of surf this morning. Keala won and I don’t think I ever saw her really complete a wave. She won by falling the most. Definite set back for women’s big wave surfing.

And the men being called off. That’s a tough one. But if they want to go. Let them go. They are big wave surfers for a reason. I don’t think it was the right call to cancel. But I’m saying that from my couch.

A set back would have been to continue excluding women from competition. It's pretty short sighted to suggest that excluding them from progression is the answer. The fact is everyone out there yesterday was out of their league. The men didn't complete any ride. They were all charging beyond their skill and level of comfort and getting hammered. The only people making it were getting towed in after the event was called... not much of a competition for either sex, unless you want to see the best big wave surfers in the world getting injured and breaking their boards, testing the limits/reliability of their inflatable suits, risking the safety teams and the rescue skis get annihilated on the rocks.

It was a great day for free surfing. It was a good test for all, men and women, to test the limits of paddling into big waves, but not a good competition.

    As you said, interesting perspective.

Bianca was probably the only woman out there that had the ability to maybe get one of those waves. And by setting it back, i don’t mean that the women got worse, I meant that next time there is an event and the waves are big, people will say “I’ll wait to watch the men’s event”. The sitting for 3 hours and seeing nothing but failed attempts to get to their feet is tough. I still do believe that set back Womens surfing. If anything they should have called the girls and let the guys go out after the first heat the women had.

Also, I can’t stand the equal pay surfing.

Imagine if the wnba made the same pay as the nba.

Agree 100% with this. I don't think people realize how much the wind affects them too out there. It wasn't "the waves are too big to surf" issue, it was a combination of things. It's not just the surfers at risk out there, it's the water patrol as well. Ya, people are gonna surf it if the comp is off, but that's on them. Not worth it to have the surfers get injured or killed.

I strap down 12'6", 8'6", all my short boards go in bed and sometimes stick my jetski in bed.

I agree with you too though that people will say those things. I just won't be one of them. I was disappointed that Bianca didn't get a wave in the final and most of the rides went unfinished... Still, they were charging in maxxxing conditions and I can't help myself but to be arguing for equal rights and respect for women. Our discrimination is deep rooted and I hope for change and progression, not complacency with the same old thing.

Most women don't have an interest in "getting out there" historically. I find it hard to take most any woman hunting or fishing all day. Hell to even work a camera while she's laying out on the beach.

Scripps/Blacks are my home spots. Scripps just south of the pier a little bit to the left of the stairs.

While I hope the comment about laying on the beach by the boat guy was sarcasm, back to my comment, I hope you realize I have complete respect for women. And I believe that is where I get so frustrated in politics and the world we’re in. If you say something opposing someone else you auto become a hater. I know you’re not saying that. And thank you. But it can be hard to have a real conversation about things because of that.

So getting back to it. I do agree in most work places we need to fight for equal pay for equal skill sets. Whether you’re male female whatever color or culture.
But when it comes to entertainment. Nope. You reap what you sow. And if your entertainment is not producing what another’s is, you don’t deserve equal pay just because you’re male or female etc. the WNBA generates how much revenue??? Why and even better asked HOW would it be possible for the women to be paid the same contracts as the men?? I don’t know how the WSL is financially doing it. I wonder if it’ll last.

I most likely feel this way because I am in sales. I get paid based off what I sell. Entertainment is sales. If people aren’t watching what you’re producing. Ad dollars aren’t being made. If people aren’t buying merch you’re sponsored by, money is not being made. Thus you shouldn’t be paid the same.

There is a reason Kelly Slater makes more money than Miguel pupo. Is that fair?? Yes. It is. The women should not be paid the same amount as the men.

Respectful debate is a good thing. I can see your perspective, and agree with you fundamentally about reaping what you sow.
