I'm sorry that I am starting my first post here with such a odd question. I have a 96 4wd with the 3rz-fe and basically it doesnt have the power that I want. I have looked into doing a diesel swap but I really dont know how much cutting and welding I want to do to the frame. So my question is has anyone swapped the 4.0l into a older generation taco? Thanks for the help guys.

From what I have been told (and I have no direct experience on this), you are looking at about the same amount welding work work to get the GRFE into your Tacoma as you would be to drop a diesel engine in it. The GRFE swap would also require a transmission adaptor plate. If you got a diesel made for that year, you may not have to worry about the adapter. Both swaps would envolve ECU and dash work - which is the least fun of it all...

If you want some more info, take a look on http://customtacos.com (lots of 1st gens with custom engine work) and/or contact Todd @ http://dieseltoyz.com at info@dieseltoyz.com.

    Cheers!
