The driver's side seatbelt on my 2000 3.4L SR5 is getting really frayed. Wondering if anybody knows whether I can put a passenger side belt from a 2003 1st gen on the driver's side of my 2000 1st gen? Thanks!

@otis24 Do you think I should be concerned that my retracting device doesn't work any longer? It seems okay to me, but I really don't know how to tell if that part needs replacing. The belt webbing is fraying pretty badly at this point.

That's a good question. My truck has the same issue. I think it's just the spring that rewinds the strap.

I think there's some stuff on youtube or TW that'll give you some good info on how to tighten that spring.

    Edit:
Actually I agree with Truck Yeah! Just replace it along with the strap part if it's really bad.

@Truck Yeah! Sorry I made a typo. My retracting component works just fine. The belt, however, is really frayed and I think I could potentially fail in a really bad crash. So I obviously want to replace that belt.

@otis24 I believe you can just take out the belt webbing and rewind the spring back closer to factory specs. Those will stretch over time but may not need to be fully replaced.

@otis24 Let me know if you successfully tighten the spring. Prob an easy project to knock out if I'm going to replace the webbing anyway.

For sure. I probably won't get to it for awhile but I'll share any links I find along the way.

That's great news @Tour991. Spent my morning tracking down a 14mm socket and never got around to installing the belt. Looks like I have a midweek project to tackle now.

@Dirtbag4Life I see you're in Oakland. I'm in the South Bay in Campbell. I'm coming up to Oakland on Saturday to meet some friends at the King Fish Pub on Temescal (I think that's where it is anyway). If you want to meet up.

Oh nice! I live about 6 blocks from the Kingfish Pub. It is without a doubt my favorite bar in Oakland. (My next favorite is called The Avenue just a few blocks from the Kingfish.) Thanks for the invite but I'll be in Monte Rio all weekend for a wedding.

    Yeah! Bay Area people unite!

Hayward checking in, but I’m moving to San Francisco on Thursday.

Honestly, I’d just replace the seatbelt. Even if you had the webbing replaced - it’s still an almost 20 year old mechanism. I only paid about $150 for my new Seatbelt from Camelback Toyota.

It’s well worth the money in my option. Message @gunny1005 if you want a good deal on one, he’s a Toyota parts department manager and I buy all my parts exclusively from him as he has some of the best pricing on the web.

Thanks for the opinion, and welcome to the neighborhood. I ended up getting a full mechanism/belt combo from a 2003 Tacoma. So, just a little bit newer than my old one. Plan to install it some night this week. I'll monitor it and if it doesn't seem better than my stock setup I will likely just buy a new system altogether.
