I’m new to the forum. I bought a set of Tacoma TRD rims for my 2012 Tacoma from a Toyota dealer about a month ago to replace my steel wheels. At the time they verified that the new rims fit my truck and tires. I setup an appointment to have the dealer to swap the rims. In the middle of the process the service representative came to me as said that the existing tire pressure sensors can’t be used with the TRD wheels. Replacement sensors were going to be $650. The dealer never said that I would need new sensors. I could have stopped there but I liked the wheels so they put in rubber stems. The problem is that without the sensors my low air light is always on. The dealer said there was no way to disable the light. So is that true?

If you have the old sensors, put them in a pressurized PVC tube.

You could also pull the gauge cluster and disable the LED.

Or just deal with the light. It's on my truck from Oct to April when I have my studs on doesn't bother me.

Surprised they finished the job without working sensors. Most tire places won’t do the work knowing you are leaving with non functioning sen50rs.

I don't know why they couldn't use the old sensors. My 2008 had the TRD Sport wheels and the steel spare. All 5 sensors were identical.

They said that sensors from steel wheels will not physically fit in the TRD rims due to the angle of the stem in the rim. I'm irritated because they didn't tell me that when I bought the wheels, nor did they offer up an affordable alternative. It didn't seem to bother them to just replace the sensors with standard rubber stems. I will probably just get use to ignoring the light. I just thought some else may have run into this and had come up with a fix.
Thanks for the suggestions. The pressurized PVC is Brilliant!!

Put a piece of tape or picture over the light. Two cents, problem solved

    Exactly!
Small piece of black electrical tape. After a while you won't even notice...

New sensors are $20 each on Amazon.

Amazon.com: MOBILETRON Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor (TPMS) for Lexus, Toyota (TX-S008), 315MHz, Set of 4 : Automotive

Tire stores will install them at no charge while mounting tires, $10-$15 each if they install them keeping the old tires.

This isn't a big deal and not expensive. $80 every 10 years is cheap enough. Thats about 2 tanks of fuel.

I recently ordered a set of 4 (and a spare wheel) Gen3 alloy wheels to replace the stock steel on a 2009 Access Cab, and TPMS sensors and factory lug nuts through eBay Motors. The sellers have been great at confirming what eBay's vehicle compatibility algorithm misses, a 16x7J wheel with 6x139.5 (6 x 5.5 inches) bolt pattern fits more than a single generation. The brake light used to come on and stay on in the 1970 Travelall so the dash always had that electrical tape cover. The TPMS sensors arrived programmed for 2009-2012 Taco so we're golden. If my friends argue with me about installing these, well, I plan to order a new tire for the spare wheel and would buy the single sensor when they mount it at Costco Tire. I looked at new wheels, thought about calling wrecking yards, and then started finding takeoffs from tire shops when people swap for larger wheels and tires. Not a bad deal considering the centers came with the set of four. A new center for a steel wheel at our local dealer cost about the same as the four pre-programmed sensors from an eBay dealer.

Does unplugging from the box in the headliner really work? I read through that thread and some of the Tacoma owners say no. Asking for a friend.

    Brand new.

You could open the cluster and cover the low tire pressure light with electrical tape, but first cover it with sharpie and live with it

This is a new one to me -
The sensors in my car have been bunk from the day I got it at 30k miles and thru about 5 sets of tires, I have never gotten grief for it; I just tell them it never worked and that I do not care.
