My dealer has been changing my oil with synthetic under the Toyota Care program, saying it's "required". Fine, as long as they are paying for it. The manual says nothing about synthetic being required.

Anyone else run into this? When the Toyota Care is up, I'm going to tell them to just follow the manual . . . .

I doubt there is any oil available in 0W20 unless it is Synthetic .

Toyota calls for 0W-20. That specific viscosity is only available in a synthetic, so the manual is calling for a synthetic.

I imagine the seals on these motors are spec'd with synthetic in mind.

these engines require synthetic oil. my or may not be spelled out but required. for starters if you used non synthetic oil and had an issue with the engine and toyota discovered non synthetic oil in it they will void the warranty.

For all intents and purposes it is classified as a synthetic lol. If you really want to get into the weeds pretty much everything in life is natural, even synthetic lol.

I don't think so. From the owner's manual (which says nothing about synthetic):

So, I could use 5W-20 conventional every-other oil change and be in full compliance with the oil standards as stated in the manual. No warranty issue.

It's for gas mileage to meet stricter CAFE specs, just like the airdam.
    Synthetic oil increases economy.

Why change conventional every 3K instead of syn every 10K+ ?

He would lose money in more engine wear and more frequently needed oil changes.

Oh, I will, which is 0W-20, or 5W-20 every-other oil change, with 0W-20 in between, with not a peep said about synthetic. I'll just go with 0W-20, but I will not let people get away with suggesting I MUST use it or my warranty will be void. Words mean things.

Engine oil gets contaminated, it’s a fact and at 3k miles there is always clean oil. At 10k I would assume there will be lots of contaminates rolling around in there for lots of miles. For longevity you want as clean as oil as you can have in the engine all the time. I always change mine every 3k and pushing 570,000 miles

    I just don't get it...

This is an expensive truck... You spent the money on the care package...

$10 extra every oil change has got your feathers ruffled to the point your going to alternate your oil types....

    Just makes no sense...
