First it would need to stand on its tail a foot or so off the ground and open the zipper to get into the tent cot. That’d be a pretty determined snake. Would probably build a catapult to launch itself onto the truck if you put the cot-tent across the bedrails. No win situation with the nakes.

I've spent years trying out different backpacking gear to find what works for me. My hiking buddy found what works for him. We may see some silly looking piece of gear, but it may not be so silly when it works well for you. Hike your hike. Ride your ride. Camp your camp. You know what I'm sayin.

Because they are new to the outdoors and have limited understanding and irrational fears.

I went on a weekender a couple weeks back with some seasoned wheelers/campers/outdoorsmen that I know. As we set up camp I realized: 6 trucks and not one RTT.

Scorpions in shoes, small sidewinders in golf tee cups, diamond backs in the same spot you walked past 7 times in the last 5 minutes. I do have to admit that every one of the 3 sidewinder, rattle snake bites, I have actually seen up close in person were on the fingers because the dumb asses were messing with the snake. But if it make me sleep better, I figure that is how I would go about spending the night in the desert.

Yeah it didn’t take me long to learn that mildly cold weather requires some insulation due to the compression and airflow in the hammock. Felt like I was going to freeze to death the first night I used below 50 degrees lol.

The amount of work to stabilize that cot on your truck makes the idea silly. Just get a truck tent, can’t see that cot costing less. Both would require them to be removed to drive the truck and the truck tent is made for this purpose. Either go all in with a RTT or get a tent. Your money and your time, but to me this idea is just silly.

I don't blame Ya. I enjoy outside the box ideas. Not for normal folks and I stand under that. I remember when my buddy first used the ramp of his toy hauler for a patio.

I have a little anxiety being on the ground level - feels vulnerable whether it is or not.

I seen a snake, not positive what or which one it actually was because I turned around after hearing my wife, go over a 6 foot block wall like an olympic hurdler. Best of my recollection, it was about a 3 footer.

Yea, sometimes they do get too close, but only because "I" wasn't watching were I was going.

And that's a big one, imagine a 6" pencil sized sidewinder that you have to get Med Flighted 150 miles for...although that is why they make boots.

If a grizzly bear wants that hunk of gum in your pocket, or the tomato sauce you spilled on your shirt, he'd get your ass in the Holiday Inn in Toledo. Be safe out there...lol

Methinks the advertisers for RTT companies in Africa and Australia are pretty smug about how they convinced American campers that they just needed to sleep off the ground in the untamed wilds of savage North America. To the point where people are perching non-truck tents on trucks.

    Pretty brilliant scheme, really.

Soo....why not put the ground tent/cot on the ground?

Are people so caught up in having the RTT look that they're putting any tent on thier truck?

My first thought is that I hope this dude is single, because if he brings a date up there those bedrails are gonna be thrashed.
