Only good Jeep is not even a “Jeep”

    Willys overland MB

Better known as the flat fender. Cool as ice if you got one of these.

Being in the auto buzz for some 38 years there is not a shot I would own a Jeep! The little ones fall over all of them handle like a pig stupid things break maintenance nightmares and don't hold their value. If you like going into the woods to see if you can get stuck then yeah.

I feel like I can chime in on this convo. I came to own a Taco in 2017 (3 year lease) after needing to pull a boat. My most recent Jeep (I have owned three, YJ, TJ and JKU) was my favorite vehicle I have ever owned. Bought her new in 2015 but with only 3500# towing capacity she wasn't long for ownership in my stable. Anyone who says that Jeeps aren't worth it are just plain wrong. They are fun to drive, have a stellar off-road reputation and their online owner community is second to none. And don't even get me started on the aftermarket options. Staggering is putting it lightly.

I have owned three Jeeps and will own a fourth. I like my Taco for what it is....my first vehicle to tow a boat...but I will be making the move to the new Tundra late next year for better long range towing.

If you want to consider a Jeep, and as mentioned above, ignore anything older than 2012 (unless you go really old school) as the Chrysler 3.8L is garbage. I had zero issues with my 3.6L in the 2.25 years I owned her. Zero. 32k miles. And even after putting on a lift and larger tires/wheels I STILL made money on the trade. Of course they tried to lowball me at the Toyota dealership but after I told them to pound sand, and walked out, the sales manager called me before I could even get home requesting that I come in and talk directly to him. I did and the 2017 Taco came home.

I love the Jeep community, ability and overall ownership. My interest in the new Gladiator is only due to me being a fan of the brand in general. But you can't replace V8 grunt (and truck weight) for towing.

So if its worth anything I just moved from Jeep to TACO. This wasn't really based on quality (although some do experience these issues with Jeep) it was more based on value vs need. I modified all my Jeeps over the years from lifts to tires to having every possible accessory available if I wanted it. But needing a pickup the new Gladiator while a Jeep in image isnt a Jeep at heart IMO. Price was very high and it still handled just like every other 35-40K Jeep but cost almost 60K. TACO was a great economical, comfortable and versatile choice. There arent nearly as many aftermarket options for TACO compared to Jeep but thats because most options seem to already be in TACO. And I saw the leasing part of this and while Im not sure if thats your plan, it seems counter intuitive to lease a vehicle and then mod it to only have to turn it back in and remove the mods or give them away.

This is what I would do, in this exact order:

    1) Find 3 lb SFH.

    2) Find bottle of whiskey. Take 5 shots. Do absolutely nothing for exactly 10 minutes.

    3) Place hand on bench and smash with 3 lb small fucking hammer.

    4) After the endorphins wear off and your hand feels like a heartbeat, have one of your best friends give you a swift kick in the uprights. This will cure the hurting hand problem.

    5) Take 3 more shots of whiskey.

    6) Find a mirror, gaze into the mirror at yourself, then commence to slap yourself a few times.

    Repeat daily.

This is what Jeep ownership is like.

    This wise man gets it....

All that's important is that YOU like your Miata. Stereotypes are horrible and I'm sure many manly men own Miatas and enjoy driving them.

It doesn't matter what us straight guys think.

All of this! The Wrangler has to be the coolest damn vehicle in the world but until FCA gets their s#%t together it’s hard to want one. Just last week there was a stop sale order due to more steering issues, and go take a look at the issues poll over on the JL wrangler forums, something like 75% of people have had issues with their’s over there.

Also worth mentioning, I have a brand new Ram Promaster City van that I use for work. 2400 miles on and it burns oil, which I discovered when it died in the middle of an intersection. The dealers advice? Check the oil every time you get gas, if something happens because you’re low on oil it’s not covered under warranty. Nice. Chrysler dealerships have to be some of the scumiest places in the world.

Leased my ‘17 Taco. Might buy a Wrangler...cheaper end, not Rubicon. Wouldn’t customize a lease. And with my Pro, didn’t have to. It kinda has all the options. I don’t rock crawl, but I do like 4WD. My concerns over Jeeps are quality, noise and leaky roof. This might not happen at all now. I still love the idea of a Jeep. But not sure if I’d Like it everyday. And I love Tacos. Best trucks on the road, imo.

Once you get the Jeep bug is hard to shake off, I’m afraid.

If the itch persist, you may want to find a low miles used Wrangler at a good price, buy it and see how it goes. If you don’t have any issues, have fun. If you hate it and sell you won’t lose your shirt.

There are sweet deals out there. You just need to take your time to find them. Two to three months is not uncommon.

I don’t see you being happy with a base Wrangler after having been in a TRD Pro, though. If you don’t crawl, a Sahara may be the best in terms of comfort, features and capability. It’s Wrangler’s best selling trim level and they are less expensive than Rubicons.

The best Wrangler I owned was a 2015 Unlimited Sahara I bought used with 5,000 miles for $34,000. Sold it for $30,000 three years later. Didn’t give me any issues. I should have kept it.

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
I see what you did there.

I have owned 3 Jeeps and will most likely be purchasing a 4th this fall/winter for my wife. No major issues, but they do seem to need a little more attention than my Tacoma. I don't mind since I like poking around and tinkering in the garage.

Not true. Glad comes in Sport, Overland and Rubi. I still wouldn’t do it in any of them though. Matter of fact I was all set to by one in Rubicon then came to my senses and bought a taco instead.
