I thought the "taco tick" was from the injectors? If so, changing oil brands ect. wouldn't help with that would it? Am I missing something here? Just curious

dont use additives in your oil... shit like that is snake oil and messes with detergent packages.

The taco tick is mainly from the evap valve on the side of the intake. Like the link above isolate it with some rubber washers and it will reduce the sound quite a bit.

My gen1 ticked like mad. Thought it was from the valves but the dealer said it was the fuel injectors. 15 years later still running like a swiss watch. my 2015 is very quiet in comparison.

Same thing for the 2015, but I notice the tick came only when its cold, but will go away when it's reached the normal temperature. I just not paying attention to it.

No additives to mine. Just the Mobile 1 synthetic. I'm not saying it will make everyone's quieter, but it did for mine. I then went to a different brand and it became noisy again. Go back to Mobile 1 and less noise again. Beats me, but I guess it worked for someone else too.

Completely normal, mine sounds the same.

The thing to listen for is pinging, while under load, when in hot weather. Pick a known jersey barrier along your commute or a concrete wall, then put your windows down and listen. Gas station pumps also reflect the noise well. On balmy hot and humid days, pinging will be loud.

Ive spent hours reading about this taco tick but can't find anything that seems to be a sure fix. I'm more leaning towards replacing the exhaust manifolds but im hearing doubt that will fix it. timing chain and gears done, valve clearances perfect. detached the vsv(whatever its called) valve and strapped it away from the intake and no difference. added some lucas oil stabilizer and it helped but still very loud. haven't ran it enough with the additive though. may not have circulated entirely. reinstalled the engine cover(to help with noise) and was considering spraying rock guard or some kind of spray insulation under the hood and inner fender but i doubt it would make it tolerable. I'd love to know if installing headers does anything or is it better to stick with oem parts.

You won't notice the pinging at all if the college girl gas jockey stands next to the pump.

Likewise, it's just part of owning a Taco at this point.

My 2015 sounds similar. There's a tick or flutter to it for sure. I'm realizing as well that I just have to ignore it and deal with it. ;)

Heck, my 2005 Camry had a flutter/tick to it. I brought it up to a mechanic once and he told me Toyotas just do that. I put 50k miles on that Camry before I traded it in. Never had a problem. Was a reliable car.

picked my 2015 up on monday, DCLB, 22 miles on it and it ticks...but rather quietly. Either that or I'm just used to noisy LS engines.

Did you hold your head just right when you put it in :notsure:? It may just all be my imagination, that's why I never mentioned it before until someone else said the same thing earlier. Guess it just depends on all of the other variables as well. All trucks are different. Mine still makes the noise, it's just not as noticeable. It doesn't bother me anymore because I know it's normal. I even listen out for other Tacomas when they are near me in parking lots and such to see if I can hear theirs.

Part of the tick is the evap valve, but the valve train on these engines is just plain loud - the loudest I have ever heard. Oil/oil additives might make a difference on the valve train, but not the evap valve (if it effects the evap valve, I think you have bigger problems:D).
