Make sure your tank is low on gas ... should make it easier. ;)

I filled up today, but I've got a 250 miles round trip this weekend so I should run it pretty low

My new pump should be in tomorrow. It will probably be Sunday or Monday before I get to install it

Well today is the day for fuel pump install, and a couple of other minor maintenance items. I won't be able to get to it until early afternoon, but I will be sure to let y'all know how it goes.

I'm done with the install. Took longer than planned. The instructions from urd were ok, but did omit a few steps.

I just drove up to make sure everything was working, went and filled up with gas. Had a good bit of gas leak out of the pump assembly so I need to drop the tank and retighten that.

I'm letting it sit for a little while and then I'm gonna go crank it up and see if it's cranking better.

Well, just let it sit for about and hour and a half. Went out and got the old long start again....

Fuel pump swap did not help, and now I've got to drop the tank again and retighten the pump assembly to prevent it from leaking again on fill ups.

Fuel pump swap did not fix the problem.

Don't be because you were going to have to do it sooner than later anyways.

Did you swap out your plugs already by the way?

Denso is on one side NGK on the other. For some reason that has been known to cause issues also.

This is the nature of these new generation vehicles. Too many on board electronics and overcomplicated setups over what simplicity can accomplish the same, causes odd problems and hard to track down issues. While this issue is well known of there are other variables which have to be or should be addressed which can cause much of the same symptoms.

Also, while not probable because they are pretty well built on these trucks you might want to take a look at the VVT sensor/ cam sensor assemblies. Whatever you have going on is being produced by a hot saturation issue. Seeing that the entire engine is basically a convection oven during the summer and you are not having no start conditions, rather long starts, cam or vvt sensors are up next. They could be getting too hot and internally failing at extended heat saturation before start up. A lot of other Toyota' have issues ranging all sorts of symptoms with them but since they read camshaft position signals at all times if they are not reading at first that will cause the PCM to search for a known good signal value during cranking.
