Only thing I worry about with these is the long term affects on the bed. They should have some type of bracing that ties into the bed to frame bolts. Friend has a flip pac, similar to this, and it's starting to separate and tweak the bed.

They look pretty sweet though, but I think they are really expensive.

I really want one. Does that count for anything? I've been planning a slide in, but the Habitat seems like the better way to go the more I think about it. Just have to convince the wife...

I have zero experience with them, but I know it's one of my long term goals.

I used to own a FlipPac and spent about 15 minutes crawling around the AT Habitat and opening and closing it. If it fits your needs, it's an awesome product and as far as I know the vendor is a straight-up company. However, it's a lot of money and weight ... though a bit lighter than some fiberglass shells plus rack plus conventional RTT. I'm not convinced that the rear opening doesn't have some drawbacks compared to the flip-forward design of the FlipPac. Larger footprint and more obstructed entry to the bed. James Baroud has published some sneak peeks of a FlipPac clone with a carbon fiber shell. Note that FRP, the FlipPac vendor, has ceased manufacture.

I actually want to see one in person for touch and feel. Longevity and rear hang are my concerns and of-course the expense too. If someone owns one Nor Cal, please let me know.

    Thanks

Does anyone in the States make a "camper" that would take the place of the bed? Meaning remove the bed of your truck then bolt/attach a camper or overlanding setup of your choosing. I've seen companies in Australia that manufacture these, like this one: http://www.outbackcustoms.com.au/index.html

Mine should be completed and ready to install very soon. I live in the bay area if that's close enough you'd be welcome to check it out when I get it.

Four Wheel Camper's flatbed model might be what you're after. There's probably others too.

Yeah no problem. I actually have family in Santa Cruz so I'm down there quite often.

I actually saw their flat bed build on a AC Tacoma a month ago. Matt Henwood from mainlineoverland was working with 4wheel popup campers in Woodland. It was impressive set up, but out of my price range. I was told roughly 35-40 k.

Is this the same thing that Expedition Overland uses on their 3rd gen Taco?

And... do you get anything inside it standard? Or is it literally a shell with a RTT on top? Website makes it seem like it's the shell and they tout the "advantage" of the owners then being able to then customize it as if it was a blank ($8600) canvas...

    http://adventuretrailers.com/campers/toyota-habitat/

    Seems a little...expensive...

Oh excellent! Look forward to meeting you sometime. I currently have a VW Vanagon Syncro and am thinking of switching to a Tacoma so seeing your's would be a solid education on the possibility.
