Tacoma is tracking all over highway after adding 285's.. Help

    I just went up to 285's and now the truck wants to track all over the highway, following the ruts developed by traffic. Anyone else having this issue? Is there anyway to help alleviate the problem???

    I'd contact your city council about road ruts then lol. Tire size should have zero issue with road tracking. Just maybe the wider tire is just barely the size of the ruts and causing some tracking, but I never had an issue with my 285s

    Gonna get them to check my alignment again next week to see if that helps. What lift, ect are are you running? Could changing to after market uca's help this?

    Nah, tracking is usually an alignment issue or just shitty roads. If your alignment is in spec, then it's just roads and you're SOL lol

    What size are your rims? Tread too wide for rims will cause tracking problems.

    He's fine, those SCS are 16x8 or 17x9 iirc so 35's are still fine lol. You can run 33's on just about any rim for the tacoma.

    I had mine road force balanced at full pressure (65), then dropped back down to normal pressure (50~55) after balancing, made a world of difference. Also, it takes a couple hundred miles for the plies to set as the rubber outgasses. Best to only rotate back to front if they are squirrely and settle.

    Whoa! 65 is like max pressure lol? I usually ran 45-50 in my BFG AT 33's and even that made them pretty stiff.

    Your caster is too low. "in spec" can mean it's crappy but passable. It's probably like 1.6 or something low and still in the green. Aftermarket UCA's will definitely get you more caster. I had the same lift height without UCA's and it was in spec but wandered all over the freeway. It sucked!

    UCAs are the only answer. Get up over 2.0 caster and you'll be fine. 2.5, you'll be glued to the road.

    It's likely the tire width. My in-laws' FJ used to have 285's on 20" rims and it was all over the place on uneven roads or specifically roads worn in the tire paths. Putting 265's on (and 235's in the winter) totally alleviated the problem.

    Before my uca's my truck did the same thing. As said before get uca's and as close to +3 caster as possible. I'm running 295's and track straight as an arrow.

    Its probably an alignment issue but when I got my new wheels and tires mounted I had to go back twice to get everything rebalanced because I threw a weight, two days in a row.

    I would drop your PSI too, whoever told you 65 PSI is crazy and probably eats gas like none other. I ran 35 psi on my nitto 285s, most guys do the same. As another mentioned your caster could play a part, most guys get everything in spec minus caster running stock uca's, I was one of them, but I only had a tiny bit of highway wandering with it.     The max pressure is printed on the sidewall of all tires. You want to road force balance at maxpressure to stretch the plies and minimize bump steer. Every manufacturer publishes the load rating per inflation pressure, and you want to match your inflation to the weight of the vehicle. Too much pressure makes it squirrely and just burns the middle of thread off the tire, too low and the outer edges wear first.

    I did this on my old tacoma and had the same issues. Chased allignment and pressures for years. Put on a normal set of tures for winter and problem mostly vanished. The problem is the roads not your truck. Its just with those tires and the design of our trucks combined with the road grooves you get that effect. When i moved away from home i stopped getting that problem because the roads were not rutted.
