This is the one I've been waiting for.

@OVTune if you had to hazard a guess, what do you think Toyota's main goal was with the ECU complexity?

    MPG?
    Reliability?
Drivability? (some might laugh at this but maybe they just missed the mark...)
    All of the above?

I'd just like to know what Toyota was going for. They had a reason, this I have no doubt of. My guess is it all stems from EPA restrictions but I'd like to hear what you think given what you've seen/know.

I don't think anyone was complaining about paying $0.20 more for gas. I just had a request for the OP. Not everyone is seeking a hot rod. Some just want a little better driving experience. If I want a hot rod, it won't be a Tacoma.

Even when I lived in Houston I kept my vehicles registered in the county my land is in and yes it is in the sticks. There is no amount of money you could pay me to live in Austin or DFW. I don't even pass through them unless absolutely necessary.

I'm a native but haven't lived there since I was 18. I lived in one of those counties that didn't do emissions checks.

This is product I been waiting for. Just read all 14 pages here and still no idea how far from market this product is, but I will def want it if its legit. I have had a ecu tune on every car I owned and always makes it 100% better. Just a solid tune makes a huge difference.

We just have to be patient. They are getting ready to try it on the dyno with the first truck. There will still be a lot if dyno tuning they will need to do to test everything. After that it will need to be tested in the real world. They just wanted to let use know it's in the test stages.

Is traction control disabled when dyno tuning?
I ask because the service manual warns against jumping of the rollers if you don't.

more questions than I can get to at once.

Regarding flash counters. Ford uses bosch ECUs. Notorious for various levels of "checks" to see if any tampering has gone on. Flash counters, TPROT, etc.

Toyota uses renesas based NEC processors. (some are so old I think they are discontinued). In my opinion Toyota is 100% about saving money, as their ECUs are very easily cloneable since they use 1 board for many different vehicles.

I will say with high confidence that there is no flash counter. Toyotas Tools for their ECUs aren't really "magical" in comparison to a IDS..
Some ECUs uses a specific type of CAN bus that makes getting data off the ECU literally impossible, since toyotas manufacture did not solder the one jumper spot on the ECU to make it possible. With that, there is nothing in the world you could hook up to the OBDII port and pull data off, or check flash counts, or anything except check engine codes.

As for why toyotas tune is the way it is:
epa / CAFE / CARB requirements
    reliability

A true testament to toyotas engineers making their drivetrains because their calibrations (the older ones) are so jam packed full of code that there is no way it's not riddled with bugs. (in my opinion). They managed to fill around 99% of the ROM file...in 8 bit no less.

There's a lot of people on here that aren't crying for power and I am one of them. It's a truck, not a racer. This has as much power as most 90's full size trucks. Is the computer programmed funky? Yes. Most of us just want the computer programming changed to make it a more driveable truck. We dont need an extra 40hp and torque if the power/torque can be made available at lower in the rpm band. If that can't be had without requiring premium fuel, I'm perfectly content driving the truck around in S5 as I have been for the last 22k miles.

Completely agreed. I came from a car with 365hp stock to this. If I wanted tons of power, I would have kept my old car. I just want the truck more user friendly.

I question those concerned about the reliability of a 'tune'. What the hell do you think is going to break? With the absence of forced induction, there isn't much (if anything) to worry about.

It would be nice if the mod's cleaned out all the garbage out of these threads.
