I’m certain that he coulda made the tune shift more softly. When you tune performance cars for a living you’re use to programming things to what performance people want, a solid firm shift. I suspect that this Tacoma thing was completely outta his realm and there was a learning curve to try to make a tune for the masses they weren’t necessarily seeking his tune out for performance but to cure the lackluster driveability aspect. I don’t recal ever hearing a single person complain about shifts being too firm on the tune so it never got messed with. In fact, I remember during the alpha stages that people were asking about the trans shifting being firmed up because they were mistakenly thinking that the ECU map that was being flashed was strictly for the ECU. Most didn’t know that most shifting parameters were set in the ECU and not the TCU. I firmly believe that if people had voiced that they wanted slushbox shifting outta the trans way back when that Matt coulda provided that although that is counterintuitive to performance. Soft shifting equates to higher trans temps, more wear on the trans and less performance.
All of this stuff is basically a moot point though cause people are happy and once 1.05 is out even more will be happy-er

matt has said several times this is not a performance tune it is a drivability tune. i for one want a smooth shifting tune that holds gears a little longer than the sloppy mess that was stock (pre latest tsb). Since it is such a mixture of firm shifts for some and smoothness for others, i think matt should put out just that. A performance release and one that literally takes the latest tsb and changes shift points and disable learning and that should cover most of this audience.

You can’t manually shift an AT from 4th into 5th. Sport mode sets the maximum gear the truck will upshift to...if you’re in S5, the truck will still shift to 5th if it “thinks” it needs to. S4 limits the maximum gear to 4th.

Getting some miles on 1.04R for 04B04 after doing the TSB file with Techstream myself. So far it’s been a major improvement for me.

There is a rock quarry and some steeper hills just a mile north of my house. With 1.04 on 04B03 I had terribly chaotic shifting on these hills. Starting at the bottom in 6th at 55-60mph, it would shift to 5th and then immediately to 4th, then 5th, then 4th, sometimes 5th then 4th again and again. I was also having other unpredictable chaotic shifting events in some situations. If I used ECT in these situations I got a harsh downshift to 4th and then it would stay in 4th to finish the hill.

1.04R- now on the same hills it will downshift from 6th to 5th and maintain speed on the hill, sometimes unlocking the converter in 5th for a few seconds or calmly downshift to 4th and hold that gear for a little while. No more shift to 4th, speed up, shift to 5th, slow down, shift to 4th BS.

Every situation with 1.04R is feeling much, much better than 1.04.

    Your half right, Tips.

Your right about it limiting gears to the top gear noted on the dash. But your wrong about being able to manually shift it up.

But if it won't shift out of 4th in D and I put it in S an shift up to 5th and the tranny does what I tell it to, I'm shifting it fifth aren't I?

    YOU’RE

You’re ALLOWING it to shift into 5th. You’re not TELLING it to.

    There’s a difference.

Less chaotic than 1.04, but I only put a few miles on 04B04 before installing 1.04R

    Whatever, spelling police.

If I'm in D and all the throttle, rpm, and torque parameters are in a place that should allow the engine to shift into 5th from 4th, and it doesn't, I pu it in S, (without moving my foot from the pedal changing my RPM or speed), and shift from 4th to 5th, pop it back into D and it stays in 5th.

I have effectively shifted gears, call it what you want. The gears were there the transmission wouldn't move them so I made it move them. I do it three or four times a day in traffic. I know it's no double clutch paddle shift transmission, but you can row the gears up and down if the parameters are there to allow for it.

    Grammar police, but who’s counting.

No matter what you think you’re doing, it’s still a gear limiter, not a shifter.

All I’ll say about all this is that if you look at the tuning market for Toyota he’s one of the only or few that’s been able to crack the ECU and actually makes a tune and not a plug and play. He’s even made changes and not charged. You can’t compare his tuning to Toyota’s money, time and people.

I guess so, but I’d suggest that if your truck is holding 4th like that, there’s an underlying issue.

It's a documented glitch some trucks have. It had it before and after the tune. Others are the same. It only does it under specific conditions. Ie: the same three goddamn hills everyday. Super annoying. If I wait long enough It'll shift on its own but by that point I'm halfway down the hill ten seconds after it should have shifted.
