Anyone towing with the new Toyota tune? Concerned that the trans locks so as to avoid overheating under a good load (4k).

A couple questions: with the OV 1.04 we’re running 87 or 91? In 91 then when had Toyota reflash the new TSB are you back to running 87? Thanks.

Ok. Thanks for that info. I’m on OV 1.04 91. I just got back from a 900 mile road trip to upper-Wisconsin where their Premium 91 gas was as high as $4.02usd a gallon...I haven’t seen these high gas prices since 2008 on the mainland.

I didn’t drive on 04B04 without 1.04R for more than 10 miles. 1.04R has been great for me. Tires are 265/70R17 otherwise stock truck.

    1. 1.04R has been great on the highway. I did a 60 mile drive today, 1/2 at 80mph and 1/2 at 55-60mph. The only time I saw a downshift to 4th gear was on some steeper hills at 55-60. It didn’t downshift to 4th AT ALL between Lincoln and Omaha, 76-82mph.

    2. Don’t notice this too much but I don’t drive in town all that much. S5 if necessary I suppose.

    3. YES!

    4. To me, it seems like I get full lock in 4, 5, and 6. It seems like I get 1/2 lock at times on hills in 5th and 6th instead of a full downshift at times. This 1/2 lock is GREAT.

I agree with all of these points

Running 1.04R. All gears shift too fast in my opinion. I'll be going between 30-35 mph and it's still shifting to 5th dropping rpms to 1000 just like 1.04. If you can change timing for all gears and change the s mode shift to 5th instead of 4th when you slap it over on the highway to lock out 6th, I'd be happy.

If we've update out ecu to 04b04 do we need to provide ovtune with our new ID in order to get 1.05?

Yeah, selecting “S” mode and requiring 4th at higher speeds is annoying. You either have to plan ahead or force a downshift to 4th. I like how my Chevy just limits the gears to the current gear whenever M mode is selected. 5th in “D” = 5th in “M” 6th in “D” = 6th in “M” Makes more sense that way.

I second this. Would love for S more to just stay in the current gear when switching. I hate needing to switch over at highway speeds and the truck downshift to 4th.

Agreed. This pretty much sums it up. I hope 1.05 can match the shift smoothness of 04B04 (upshift and downshift). Low speed operation on 04B04 is also very nice (seems to always be in the desired gear when getting back into throttle after a turn).

Motion passed. That has to be the most annoying thing about S-mode. Every other vehicle with a similar feature I've used moves into the currently selected gear when you go into sport mode. Why Toyota decided to be different is beyond me.

Also @OVTune, anyway we can get the current gear to show up next to the "D" on the dash?

A lot of slushbox requests/discussion going on, so I'll try and wave my hand higher than the rest for just a second.

    @OVTune

Mat, we know when you plan on releasing 1.05 and the assumption is A/T first (as always).

Are we on track for a M/T release shortly afterward?

I went on a 400 mile round trip lastlast week, I drove to go pick up a 72 Volkswagen Beetle and towed it back home. I pulled a 16 foot tandem axle trailer, and it pulled at 65 miles per hour in 5th gear at roughly 2100rpms. I averaged 15mpg, where it was averaging 10-12 before the Toyota update. I pulled it in ECT mode, and felt it should have still pulled to 70 in 5th, but 64 was all it would hold until it downshifted again. I do not have the OV tune as of yet, I have the kit, but still saving funds for the actual tune. But wanted to give solid stock #'s. Also, I am on 3" OME lift with 285 Nittos.

I don’t find it that annoying, but I’m coming from a DCT Volkswagen Golf R. Nudge the shifter down into sport and the car immediately shifts into a lower gear. IMO makes passing incredibly easy.

Mat, can you confirm us stock guys will get a tune for us that takes into account the gearing differences?

1 - My truck is doing really well on the highway, haven't seen any issues with it holding 4th. It doesn't race to hold onto 6th like it used to and oftentimes it will roll along in 5th with TC locked <65mph if under a bit of load. Also doesn't downshift to 4th nearly as often as it half locks in 5th and 6th quite a bit which has even led to me climbing moderate highway grades in 5th where it would have historically downshifted to 4th. Upshifts are way better too - it no longer tries to upshift before cresting a hill. Downshifts seem to be timed perfectly as you are cresting.
    2. Light driving for me in that range rarely sees 6th unless I'm just coasting w/ no throttle input. I actually like how it's holding 4th at those speeds, especially under moderate load.
    3. Agree 1-2-3 is super fast and would be good to hold a little bit longer, but I don't want it all wound up holding 2nd or 3rd too long either (like ECT holding 3rd FOR.EVER. for example)
    4. I'm monitoring the sensor data and I"m seeing lock consistently in 4-6 though generally not under much load. I also rarely feel it when it locks as it's so smooth so I see it on my app. What I do feel is the half lock in 5th generally that gives me a little juice without downshifting to 4th. I personally do not think this truck likes to run TC locked under load (especially hills). On 1.04 while it was 1,000x better than anything stock, it did some wonky stuff in the mountains and it just seemed like the truck needed to unlock/half-lock vs. struggle at 5k RPMs at full lock.

As far as what it needs. The top-end is still dumping rich and while it is smoother than it was before, slight leaning of AFR up top would be nice. That said, I no longer feel the bottom end needs to be leaned out so much. It's running very smooth and is pretty responsive down there.

Transmission learning, while I know the learning tables are still there, for some reason doesn't seem to be as bad this go-around. It will upshift at 1k but it's not "lugging" to me in the sense it will sit there and lose speed like with previous calibrations. I no longer feel like I'm playing ping pong with the skinny pedal to hold speed which the learning would have caused by now (1500 miles on B04).

Sometimes at a light, when I am moderately accelerating (50%-60% throttle) the transmission does seem to hesitate between 3-4 gear shifts for a split second like it's confused but it's so quick and the shift is so smooth I'm sort of getting used to it.

Also, while the 3500 rpm jolt of power has been somewhat smoothed out with B04, it's still there and one thing I definitely loved about 1.04 was how it was a bit more linear

Did you ever get any stock tires you could test with by chance? How much do those ProComps weigh in at?

I don't have any issues about anything above except downshifting into gears where rpms cannot support the acceleration (#2, it shifts too soon). I just want my foot on the gas in one position and have the truck accelerate linearly (from 0 to 45 mph) - in other words, make it so we don't have to push the gas peddle down in order to compensate for a shift that happened too soon. It seems I am constantly pushing on the peddle just to keep up with traffic. Does that make sense? Hard to explain.
