Forced induction helps the engine in higher elevations because you're putting more air in than a naturally aspirated engine can dream of at a high elevation. It's the reason why they used to put superchargers on fighter planes like the spitfire

Turbos struggle at significantly high elevation, especially if you were custom tuned nearer to sea level. FI loves cool, dense air, and air is thinner up higher

Do automotive turbos not work like aviation turbos? In turbocharged piston airplanes, they’re specifically installed to maintain sea level horsepower at much higher altitudes.

I'm no engineer, so I'm not going to pretend to have an answer for that question. But I know from personal experience too that automotive turbos love denser air. My ms3 targeted 29psi on 33% e85 using a gtx3076r and struggle-bussed HARD at 8k ft in Cloudcroft, AZ. My buddy with a BNRs4 (somewhat similar in size to a gtx30 series) lives at 6500ft and with the same tuner working the magic, could only target 24psi max I believe because of the thinner air. I also remember the TFL Truck guys comparing the gen1 and gen2 raptors at aome ridiculously high elevation trail and remarking on if they think the TT ecoboost would be needing to work harder

Turbos at higher altitude give you more power over NA (obviously), you'll lose more power NA than you'll lose with turbos up there.

For instance a 600HP NA (at sea level) vs a 600HP turbo (at sea level) the turbo will retain far more power than the NA up at 8k feet.

Well, yes, you get your bump in power, but that doesn't mean that turbos don't struggle in thinner air

Oh they do, they just lose less than an NA engine up there

I honestly prefer the stock tune over 1.05, 1.05 was a total let down :(

Everything struggles at high elevation which is exactly why planes and helicopters have fine they don't struggle too much
