I was the same way... Following the instructions to the tee is vital. Not to mention Matt has laid it out very easily! Pull the cord and make it happen. You won't regret it!

EDIT: I gave my review about 3 pages back!

Just don't pull the cord when you're writing to the ECU ;)

Hello Gentlemen and Ladies. I have not posted here on this site before but have been watching this thread since the beginning. I just wanted to put in my two cents worth and you all can take it for what its worth. I have owned my 17 Tacoma 2wd AT for about 3 months now and it has about 4000 miles on it. I am happy with this rig. While I do think it suffers a bit from low end torque between 1000 and 2500rpm, it seems to be more then adequate. The butt dyno, as you all like to call it would be very misleading on this truck since you are not really thrown back in your seat much as the front suspension does no lift all that much which gives that feeling. I have no mods to this truck and no tunes and am doing about 7.8 seconds 0-60. Now granted I am a 2wd without big tires but I still think that is very good. I have also not had the stutter that everyone is talking about. I found that after about 2 to 300 miles or so the ecu and the tranny had learned the way I drive and have adjusted accordingly. My truck now waits a bit longer to shift than it did when I first bought it and winds up higher then it did before it upshifts. I have noticed that it also downshifts quicker then it did when I first bought it as well. I have averaged about 21mpg since I bought it as well, driving back and forth from work on hilly terrain for about 12 miles. I guess I should also note that living in northwest Washington state I am about at sea level. The only thing I can think of to mention is that occasionally when it dowsnshifts from about 1200rpm to a higher gear it pings for a second running on 87 octane, but it has only started recently doing this, and I account for it being carbon buildup on top of the pistons increasing compression above the factory 11.8.

Does a tune help this engine? I am sure it does and likely gives it some mid range torque and horsepower. However we are talking about a 3.5 liter V6 here which in my opinion does quite well for what it is. I haul cars for a living and haul a lot of other mid size pickups like the tacoma. I can say that none of them are as well put together as this truck, and none of them get the gas mileage that this one does with the exception being the Chevy Colorado Diesel. Does the f150 get better mileage? Maybe. But I want no part of a turbo charged small engine moving a 4800lbs truck and pulling trailers. Toyota has demonstrated that they know what they are doing and for the most part build very reliable vehicles that continue to do exactly what they are supposed to do over many hundreds of thousands of miles.

So what you're telling me is we need a diesel Tacoma.

Jokes asides, it's a general consensus around the forum that the Tacoma is the best in the segment. That's doesn't mean it's without faults, and most of these faults shouldn't exist.

Most of us didn't do the tune for power, it was for refinement. Power gains were secondary.

Every Toyota I have owned has had weaknesses and faults, however, for the most part, they are nothing compared to the competition. Is Toyota perfect? No. But they are the worlds number one car manufacturing company, and I would like to think it is for good reason.

Love the tune, I think it's perfect. I was going into this with realistic expectations, unlike some of you on here. If you're expecting a 4.0 feel, simple solution get a 2nd gen, no further debate necessary.
Small refinements in the tune have made a dramatic difference in the performance as a whole. If nothing else and no other changes come out of this I can with clear conscience say money well spent.
Gained mpg, no placebo here, I think it's due to transmission holding gears better, and a slight bump in grunt down low not requiring for an upshift when cruising.
Lastly, absolutely no need for a quicker throttle response, this will not work especially on motor of this character imo. I'm guessing any quicker throttle will result in bucking bronco effect when cruising at low rpms, this isn't torquey v8
All in all I'm happy, and would gladly get this tune again

I'm both happy for you and your experience and jealous at the same time. Love Toyota's in general and agree with your perspectives. MY Tacoma wasn't assembled well and has had a slew of problems, but at times it has driven great. I know it's possible and am glad you have great experiences!

Once I get my stock truck operating well consistently, I'll still be doing the tune b/c I do believe the ECU will always hold this truck back no matter what. The fact that you have so many pickup truck owners looking to buy a custom tune says something about satisfaction w/ the stock tune though...

I'm grateful to OVtune for all of the great insights and the work he's doing to help our community. thank you!

Ended up ordering an inline calibrator. I imagine if hypertech couldn't create one for the OBD2 op will have troubles too. More confident in op, however I'd rather him focus his efforts on 1.02 and other planned stuff.

Well, I'm in this primarily FOR much improved throttle response. Not like one of those throttle signal amplifier doodads, where a small push on the skinny pedal = nearly WOT. I just want minimized delay. A little pedal = a little butterfly opening.. Right now. Mash it = a lot of butterfly opening..right now. From the reviews of 101b so far, it's looking good.. Particularly for us M/T owners where throttle lag is the enemy.

I would love s mode to hold a gear no matter the throttle input. Right now i rarely use it but i would sure use it more it it really acted like a manual. Im sure there is a good safety reason for it to downshift, like for people who dont know how to use it, but thats not everyone.

@OVTune This is a good question. Specifically if so, will it be set to "not ready" state always?

I have finally finished tracing and detailing all the OEM Enhanced PID information. Logger is nearly complete.
I'll add less critical PIDs in with future updates
will come with all the critical logging with extremely fast sampling rate. These ECUs sampling rate is ridiculously fast

    for the S mode stuff.
If the ECU controls it. It can be changed. It's just a matter of finding it.
