Just got back from the dealership for my crankshaft position sensor recall. I did not reflash the ECU to the original file, just left the 1.01b installed. I had absolutely no problems with the dealer... To reemphasize what @OVTune has said, this is untraceable!

This brought a thought to me, how would we know if the dealership re-flashed our ecu? I could tell when they did mine because it drove different and they told me. Im wondering if there is a way to tell through the data though. I do know if the dealership flashes to an updated version you cant use the OV tune you had before, you have to get a new one based on the updated version the dealership installed.

Happy customer here. Put the tune in and only had short trips to work for a couple of days (5 miles). Went to the beach today - 20 miles including highway, and it is great! I hated the auto so badly I traded it for an M/T, with the tune the M/T is really nice. I still want more torque off idle, but at higher rpm this thing moves out. Very nice. Looking forward to continued improvement. Especially looking forward to hearing what a full URD exhaust including power extractors is like.

    Can you elaborate?
Will the prior OVTune file no longer load/work?
Or will the prior OVTune file still load/work but you simply lose the dealer uploaded changes?

If the OVTune file no longer loads/works, I'd have to consider that a drawback to getting the tune. It would make you forevermore dependent upon Matt (admittedly a good guy :)) to be available and willing to update your tune file.. 5, 10, 15 years down the road.

At my dealer, they gave me exactly what was performed on my truck. For this visit, it only showed "replacement of recalled crankshaft position sensor". Does not show anything else. This is an excellent thought though...

Ok.. maybe Matt can provide additional explanation. I guess it could be either that he would simply like to see the changes that Toyota made, or that loading an old OVTune over a dealer provided update could cause issues.. like a bricked ECU and inoperable vehicle. Hopefully @OVTune will step in with the answer.

The 2nd Gen was 4k. Sure, that sounds reasonable

I sincerely hope Toyota doesn't need updates this far out to make a reliable OEM calibration.

Anyways the only reason is because if you get a dealership update to the ECU, let's say for example "04B04" And you flash back to 04B03 by just reloading your tune, the truck will be fine but You lose that OEM update.

By sending us the new cal file, you get 04B04 OEM updates + your tune.

So far it looks like everyone who has been going to the dealership to get their truck updated is getting 04B03.

I'm taking the truck in for the last 24K warranty stuff,CPS recall & other stuff, hopefully done with the dealer. Then all I need is Mat's tune for 87 octane, everybody's talking good about the current tune, can't wait.

Eh TRD SC was perhaps a little cheaper because Toyota had easy access to everything they'd need to R&D it. Its not as easy for the aftermarket guys. Either way take a look at some other platforms. 7k isnt bad for FI...at all.

I mean, the 2nd gen was a lower tech, higher volume motor for the SC. Add newer tech, inflation, etc. Yeah. 7k is reasonable. LS/T
LT SC kits are as much or more.

On the subject of transmission shifting and S mode. I think these Tacomas would be 100x nicer to drive if we could simply stop the constant downshifting. Since the transmission is electronically controlled, maybe "S" mode could be modified to act more like a manual? You would have to move the lever to shift it up and down in order for it to make any shifts. This would be nice having the ability to lock it into 5th or 6th gear for highway cruising. That would be badass! I'd probably even pay a little extra if I had to.

Or you could have saved 1500 on the purchase price and bought a manual? Just sayin...
