    I agree with this wholeheartedly.

Im on 285/75/17 with 4.88 and its great to drive. Anyone who has driven the truck always says its a lot of fun to drive. I really look forward to driving now. Night and day difference.

I’m running 265/75/16 with armor and have no issues. Mine drives great and has plenty of power. Regearing is scary expensive...not to mention ruins your warranty on your drivetrain. I could see it if the warranty was up and had an extra $2k to drop. I’m going to 255/75/17 soon, but surprisingly the tires are 10lbs lighter apiece

Lol people who care about mpg don't do things like re-gear and go with big heavy tires and armor and similar mods. Because then they whine about their mpg

I've had 3 different 1st gen Tacomas, a 2002 Tundra TRD 4x4 AC and a 2005 Tundra TRD 4x4 DC. I loved my 2002 but sold it when 2nd kid came along. I then got the 2005 DC and LOVED it till it was totaled (which lead me to my 2017 Tacoma). I wouldn't hesitate to get either version of Tundra again. The 2005 had the VVTi motor and the new 5 speed transmission (2002 was a 4 spd). Neither transmission was happy towing...but if you find one that you are confident wasn't used for alot of towing, I would go with either (just make sure the 2002 has the brakes that were upgraded that year...or put the upgraded calipers on..they bolt up).

Both of those Tundra's and all the 1st Gen Tacoma's were more satisfying vehicles to drive than my current Tacoma. Not all of them were better overall vehicles (those first gen Tacomas have some sparse interiors), but none of them drove me nuts to drive like this Tacoma did.

FWIW, I was so dissatisfied with the Tacoma (even up to 1.04 OVtune, even though it was a great improvement over stock) I found a 1996 4runner Limited 4x4 w/rear locker with low mileage and bought it to replace my Tacoma. I was all ready to sell the Tacoma and DD the 4runner for a few years till something else came along that seemed worth the money. Then Toyota released the TSB...so I applied it...and was not that impressed...then I installed 1.04R and that was enough to make me want to keep the Tacoma (and all it's modern conveniences). It's not perfect by any means, nor do I think it ever will be (high-strung motor with double overdrives I curse you!), but 1.04R made it acceptable for me. Now to sell the 4runner...lol

i don't call 2k scary expensive considering what folks spend on king and icon suspension setups. plus warranty impact on the drivetrain is again no different than putting a lift kit on. they have to prove the gears caused a failure.

if anything the higher gear helps lessen strain on the drivetrain.

This gives me hope. I found an 03 with 150k on it, if the timing belt was replaced it is a solid candidate. I would be happy wit this set up if the engine and transmission were in more harmony.
I am currently on the upside of my truck, so if I do trade it, it would be a down payment on my next vehicle(or make a large enough dent that I could put minimal down on whatever is next).

It’s still something to consider and worth asking. They care enough to keep track of it:

    Thank you

Haven't even begun to research 4.88s or re-gearing. I'm pretty handy, but vehicle mechanics are new territory to me. Hell, I performed my first ever oil change earlier this summer right before I totalled the truck. I'm guessing it means changing the gears inside the transmission? Is this something people can do on their own, or do you have to take it to a pro? And I know these trucks don't get the BEST gas mileage, but I'd rather keep as many MPGs as I can if I end up driving this truck as far as I did the other one, namely to Alaska and back on a semi regular basis

Yea, I'm hopeful for 1.05 will make it even better. I still can't say I love this truck, but at least I don't want to set it on fire like I used to...it's only annoying sometimes now, instead of all the time...

A friend of mine pointed out the irony when I said to him that I didn't like how much more premium gas would cost over regular. He looked at me and said, "of all the money you've spent your truck, this is what has you concerned..?!" Touche. :D

BTW, I just bought a windows tablet for the sole purpose of installing this tune and I'm reminded why I ditched microsoft for apple. Setting this damn thing up got me crazy angry in record time. Damn you, Bill Gates.

I will get through this. :quickdraw:

front and rear differential, not a hard job but does require specialty tools and stuff. I have thought about regear... But don't have the tools or room here to do the work. When I do get a place I think Ill do the regear.

    Thank you sir :hattip:

It's an impossible task, to please everyone.

You've already said enough, believe me lol. It's better to just work with Mat and let the crowd say what they say. In the end, the less you say now the less you'll get called out for when someone doesn't like what was done - remember the "tip in" fiasco?!

Anyway, 1.05 91 FTW and custom tune request for any small issues.
