I found the entire blog post to be mostly confusing. It really didn't help me, as a layman, to understand why this truck is worse than a "regular" automatic. I already know that it is. Unlabeled graphs with color coding and random numbers mean nothing. And it kept reiterating that the 3rd gen will shift from 4th to 6th without going through 5th, but I've never seen the truck do that. It always shifts sequentially for me. I also don't understand why that matters... I shift my manual car from 4th to 6th every time I drive it. I didn't need 5th... why is that an issue if the truck can figure that out and skip 5th too?

I understand (and am pretty much sold on) the gear locking in S. But I would also like to know if D will be updated to allow me to use the torque available at low RPM in 5th and 6th. I don't really want to have to shift the truck manually all the time. Is D going to drive like a normal truck or is it going to be a mildly improved shitshow like 1.04/1.04R supposedly are? If I have to manually shift it to get it to drive normally, so be it, but at this point I'm more interested in how much more usable the overdrive gears are going to be in automatic mode while in cruise control on the freeway.

I really hope Mat works some magic and produces a tune that has better MPGs. I love the how the truck drives, however I'm on 1.04r and my mileage is getting worse every tank. I averaged 17 before tuning and 16 on 1.04. Now I’m down to 13mpg average on my current tank. 3 in lift, 33s, steel bumper, sliders, and skids.

Edit: also I’ve felt some rough and long shifts and gotten the rear ended feeling a few times.

Regarding skip shifting... I think Matt’s implying that the truck can pick any gear that meets constraints. Certainly it has get to it sequentially, or at least I would think it does. More often than not, the gears that meet constraints are going to be +- 1 gear from where you are, though it does seemto like 4th at highway when you give it enough throttle, so it blows through 5th from 6th.

Now, if it were a dsg, then you can go probably to any gear that’s opposite, eg any odd if you’re in even and vice versa. And up/down 2 would seem easy also.

I just know that in my Macan, when I mash the skinny pedal it picks a gear and gets there *damn* fast. But to be fair, there’s been several times from a stop when I’ve hit the gas and it sort of hesitated. I know it was the computer logic trying to figure out things.

Hey, you’re pushing on the pedal pretty far and we are at a stop, but you’re not pushing on it at “get me out of this shit now” hard. What do you want?

It only happened to me a few times in 3.5 years of ownership. I know others on that forum commented on it too. So the new computer controlled world is not perfect, even in an $80k Porsche.

I’m patiently waiting on the final release of 1.05, okay, maybe not patiently but quietly.

I noticed worse mileage too. About 1-1.5mpg avg. I think it has to do with the throttle being more aggressive = more fuel consumption (due to maintain giddyup)

I just flashed 1.05 93FO yesterday and I got a 3mpg increase through 2 full tanks and 700 miles today. Was getting 14ish on 1.05 93MA and didn’t like the feel of the tune in 5th and 6th on the highway.

I don't really see a double downshift as a problem in and of itself. Like I said, I double up/downshift all the time in my 6MT car. I am fine if the truck decides it needs multiple downshifts to give me the power I'm asking for. If I put it all the way to the floor, downshift as much as possible to get me to max power as soon as possible. Maybe that is a 5th to 2nd downshift if I am in town doing 40mph. I am fine with that. But if I am going from 20% throttle to 30% throttle, I don't need a 6th to 4th downshift.

I found that the transmission behaved that way terribly before flashing. Highway speed.... more throttle, nothing. More throttle, nothing. More throttle, oh, you want to go faster? Here’s 4th gear for ya, right there in the middle of the power band at 4500rpm. Drove me nuts.
1.04 is much better, but not perfect. By definition, 1.05 will be perfect for me as I’m going to flash and forget.

cant wait to do 1.04 and 1.05, but i also dont have any real issues with the way it drives right now.. its not bad. i just want the throttle response to match my sienna and the gains arent bad either.. maybe the CDN 2018's had a better go round stock? i also have friends w the same truck who have zero complaints.. either way.. cant wait and thanks Mat for all your hard work. Happy thanksgiving to all the americans on here

I found the explanation of this trucks configuration very enlightening, brought a smile to my face to better understand why it has felt so funky from day one.

Does anyone know or believe that the shift (delay, hesitation, rev hang, choose a description..) in lower gears, 3rd to 2nd (essentially, I feel it the most/worst when coasting between 15-25mph and then flooring it to accelerate in traffic) will be eliminated with the simplification of the tables or is that an irreversible consequence of the fly by wire throttle?

Sorry to hear that about your MPG. It’s crazy how different one truck is to the next. I was just thinking yesterday that my MPG is getting better and better each tank. I’m on 35” with a 6” Suspension System. I started at 15-16 and yesterday I got 17.7

    025E0AF5-F049-4576-990D-03E45129A640.jpg

However, I do agree. I hope 1.05 continues to increase our MPG. Interested to test out the 87 MPG vs the 92 Power. I wish I had access to 93 for the Total Performance option.

This double shift bs drives me absolutely crazy :annoyed: Lately, that is the main thing that has been standing out to me in my daily driving. I cannot wait until 1.05 removes this. It will be so nice and an even more smooth ride.

Me too, sometimes I don't even take my truck and instead drive my wife's Subaru as the shifting sucks ass on the Tacoma.
