On a serious note.
Is the motor still making power up there or is it laying over ?

Spinning this thing another 1000rpm means intake and exhaust mods will have more benefit too.

Curious if this was acheived with the Taco throttle body or with the Tundra unit.

Yes this engine absolutely makes power up there. That's where the 28 horsepower discrepancy comes from with the Tacoma and Camry. The camry also runs 87 octane but makes 306HP at a higher rpm.

Considering that we can make an additional 22+hp at the wheels, with 7000rpm 330+BHP on 93 should be within the realm of possibility. Probably more honestly. (Going by toyotas number quotes)

Seeing that this engine makes it's power at higher RPM's... I think there would be some benefit in a looser torque converter to reduce RPM drop during upshifts.
Noticed while driving wifes 2016 4runner today... RPM's don't seem to drop nearly as much during upshift. Always seems to stay around 2k.
Another thing Toyota may have missed the mark on. Converter is probably too tight.

I already run 93 octane anyway... so I'm ready for 330hp @ 7200.

If my math is correct, that's a 52hp improvement over stock.

 

So I received my tune file today. First tune for me. What are recommendations between 104r 87 vs 91? going to load tomorrow.

 

Tuned or not. 91. This Lexus engine loves premium and the tune helps you take advantage of the power.

 

If you get that TSB done tomorrow, you'll notice some positive changes in the torque converter. The shifts to become a tad more flacid but the TC is loosened up as your suggesting and the locking of the TC isn't harsh like it was before the TSB. But, if you really want to be able to rely on your truck to GO, QUICKLY when you tap the skinny pedal I'd get your tune ordered now. The TSB will tide you over in the meantime

Before any of you start mentioning flywheel mass etc - Yes, we know that'll have an effect. I'm talking about what's in the code on purpose - for emissions reasons. If you don't know about that, google it

 

I'll definitely be buying the tune... but waiting until after Christmas and hoping a handheld unit is developed.

That won't help. I just built a gun room in the basement before buying the truck.

Take her out on to the interstate and try to pull out into moving traffic in a hurry. As your life flashes before you while the 18 wheeler behind you locks up wheels and lays into its air horn and your wife is screaming at you for “letting off the gas” at the worst possible time just look over slowly at her, smile then say THAT is why we need the tune babe.
