We're lucky that the ECU was even able to be flashed by a 3rd party source. Now you want to do it with a hand held? This isn't a ford.

Agreed. If OV hadn't landed in here like a fairy godmother, we'd still have no real options here. It was a pain for me as well to get the driver / connection situation worked out initially so I get the frustration though. Have you tried a different computer? Also try uninstalling everything and reinstalling... sometimes you just need to start from scratch

The error message he described sounds like he tried to run the Guardant software (the 3rd file that's not needed with the new dongles). Ask me how I know

What's great about it is, he's fixing a damn problem of ours. We aren't really the kind of people who are in the "tuning community". We just want a better experience driving the truck.

Let's never forget this beautiful man @OVTune first post

Lots of people hoping this 3.5 can be tuned into a better truck engine I suppose

    OV 1.02 Calibration Update - 91 octane
We used the same exact truck as last time, with no changes from last time, for best consistency.

    Release 9/6/17
    1.02 91 octane
1.02 87 octane (minimal extra power expected, but all other features applied)

3rd Gen Tacoma 2GR FKS Automatic Transmission

    1.02 Update Changes -

    Throttle - Minor
    - Torque translation for load (incremental)

    Fuel - Minor
    - mild enhancements to fuel above 5000 RPM

    Valve Timing - Major
-Intake camshaft valve timing adjustment through the complete range of RPM from moderate to high load. Smoother Valve timing transitions from part throttle to higher throttle / high load.
    - Completely recalibrated Intake vale timing from 2000 RPM to rev limit
    - 4500-6500 RPM Intake valve timing calibrated for peak possible top end
    - 4500-6000 RPM Exhaust Valve timing recalibrated to sync with intake
    - Valve Timing globally adjusted for smoother moderate to high load response
    - 1000-1500 RPM intake valve timing adjusted

    Ignition - Minor
    - slight changes to ignition

16 Way Calibration Throttle Progression Control - Major
    - Major update to 16 way Throttle control for high / moderate throttle "snap" (response)

16 Way Shift Torque Learning - Major
-16 Way Shift learn maps condensed (to 10) D mode shift enhanced (see below)

    Overall -
Overall I am very happy with what we saw today with final testing for 1.02 on the dyno. We were able to further smooth our low to mid load torque and make some minor improvements to throttle/fuel/ignition. I am happy with what we saw today as well in terms of overall gains on the dyno with adjustments to valve timing and the difference in Intake Valve timing high load tuning.

Overall we saw a difference of 7-8 wheel HP over our best runs with 1.01B. Note we are seeing lower numbers on the dyno today because dyno conditions today were extremely bad, extremely hot. This is with the truck running overall around 4-6 degrees less than before due to heat soaking (room temp was 90+), compared to prior when we were seeing temps in the 70s. So we have less power overall due to heat but still we made gains in this heat over our 1.01B.

Our main focus here was 2 things : Valve Timing and Transmission enhancements. 1.02 Valve timing was COMPLETELY rewritten / calibrated for best possible safe power. We did not just focus on full throttle, our VVT map now looks nothing like stock, and it drives nicer and has faster response as a result. We will be watching with our tester to get some reported MPG numbers with this adjustment.

Transmission, we've got good news and bad news.
Good news- we were able to make some shifting improvements and make *some* of the 16 way maps condensed.

Bad news- we cannot disable the learning. By making all maps as "1" the truck will not shift. By condensing to 4, the truck will not go past 3000 RPM in 3rd gear. We found no effective combination that would allow "normal" like driving and shifting outside of making a mild learning condensation (eliminating 6 of the 16 maps).

Other News - So I tested the new 2018 Camry Valve timing, ignition timing on the truck (fuel targets look to be identical). Virtually no difference over stock expect a mild bump around 4000+ rpm. I'd bet my money on either the tacoma being "under" reported or the camry being "over" reported.

    Dyno results.

My recommendation is to NOT take these numbers as "absolute best." Run conditions were absolutely horrible.
Humidity 80% and temperatures at 90+*, Intake air temps logged at 25-30*+ higher
I am happy to report even under these conditons the truck performed quite consistently.
The gains over 1.01B under these conditions are from ONLY cam timing

I will try to get all graphs over-layed at a later time. Dyno room was so hot I did not want to stick around. Overall the gains are not "huge" but I am happy with todays conditions and finalization to VVT I was able to make smoother delivery and better top end than 1.01B or Stock.

Note once again - I tested 2018 Camry tune on the truck, virtually no difference.

1.01B Best Gray Top end(ran today) vs 1.02 VVT

First Run of the day (pink) 1.01B (not best) VS some 1.02.
