This is mostly directed to the other M/T people.... Pretty much everyone is reporting that the engine is much smoother than stock and that the low end power is similar to 1.01B. I am happy to agree that the low end power is definitely an IMPROVEMENT over 1.01B. I live on a hill that (with the stock tune) I could not comfortably take in 2nd gear. 1.01B made 3rd gear work, and 1.02 is better still.

I had the chance to test some 1.01B/1.02 test tunes from Matt and identified a very annoying issue with the VVT. I am unsure if it is just a quirk of my particular truck, or if it is actually something with the tune. It is still noticeable with 1.02.

The VVT kicks in based on "requested" power, engine load, and RPM. I normally drive conservatively and on a 1-2 shift I'm at around 2000 RPM when I get to 2nd gear. My normal habit is to feather the throttle until the clutch is fully released, then ease into the throttle again to accelerate. This transition to actually accelerating in 2nd gear causes the VVT to jump timing and the truck bucks. This is not the stutter we were dealing with originally. It is purely a function of VVT. I was hoping this could be a little less abrupt, but I need to see if things calm down after a few hundred miles.

Is there anyone with a tuned M/T that is experiencing this?

Thank you sir. My truck with stock tune bucks badly if you get on the throttle too much in second - but only if it's not up to normal operating temps.

1.02b flashed, driven about 75 miles over multiple trips today bouncing around in multiple drive situations.

Shift points are back to where I'd expect them to be after a flash - no more racing up to overdrive prematurely. BUT the shifting is much quicker and smooth as butter. Barely can even tell when it's shifting half the time it's so smooth... it was smooth with 1.01b, but even smoother now.

Throttle is even smoother than it was with 1.01b, which says a lot because it was already pretty smooth. I know the low-end can't be reliably dyno'd but damn it feels so effortless from takeoff even at mild throttle. It seems like it's breathing better... vibes thus far have been minuscule in the steering wheel. Still seeing around 20 mpgs combined.

Will report back more thoroughly once the learning has had a chance to fully take hold, but for anyone who was spooked by the shifting stuff on 1.02a fear not. Mat nailed this release - no one would be a customer of his had Toyota released these from the factory with this sort of tune.

All in all (again 75 miles in...) I'd say this is a clear incremental improvement over 1.01b. Primarily he seems to have continued to work out kinks that caused intermittent roughness in shifting, throttle lag, and even more linear (and stronger) power delivery. I didn't really get the tune for added power - I wanted to enjoy driving the truck. But the extra power IS there and it's noticeable at all RPMs for me - but of course you take off like a banshee over 3k - and when it does it feels effortless on the truck, no strain.

@OVTune I hope you do get a bit of a weekend, and thank you for the quick resolution to the shifting issue! Those maps are wonky for sure - amazes me how deep those infect everything. The smooth, quick shifting makes me happy though!

The funny thing is I never really noticed it with the stock tune. The throttle mapping was so laggy and broken it probably masked the issue. I am sure my truck was fully warmed up because I made sure to reserve judgement until after about 30 minutes of driving. I stopped to pick something up from the store, and had a 10 minute drive home. Not enough miles for a good review, but after flashing many times the past month or two I have an idea of what to look for.

A lot of people are saying 1.02 is shifting like butter.

Can we all agree 1.02 is butter?

    1.02Butter

I'm not saying anything until I get some not driving time. Except; it's perfect.

Guys.. I don't mean to be a dick, but if Mat decides to help out us few guys who didn't get a file, could you maybe not bury him in tag after tag? Just this once? He didn't even have to do anything for us this weekend but he just might. Remember, you have the tune, I and a few others don't. Please just go drive your trucks and enjoy!

I think this is more wide spread problem then what the re-call states. I suspect the re-call will be expanded at some point.

Yes. Many more affected. Perhaps to varying degrees - mine didn't stall out completely at 10k miles but was getting progressively worse... whole different experience after replacing. Add a badass tune to fix Toyotas miss and this truck is a blast to drive now. Shame they couldn't have sold it to me like that... but it is what it is!
