Oh so it's the ECU itself not a version level issue. Seems weird that toyota has some one-off ECUs out there like that.

I really want to get the OVTune for my 2016 Tacoma but not sure if I need TSB 0062-18 applied first? My Tacoma is one of the early ones built in mid October 2015. I read somewhere that the early 16 Tacoma’s need the TSB applied before flashing the ECU. Do I need to buy the OV tune software to determine if I need the TSB? If I need the TSB can I apply the TSB myself with the OVTune flashing software or can it only be done by a dealer? Thanks in advance. I know that’s a lot of questions.

It is possible you'll need the TSB with a build that early. The only way to know for sure is to hook the truck up to a scanner or use the hardware provided with the OVTune kit to do so. With that said, you can download a copy of TechStream (link is in this thread if you search for it) and update with latest TSB files (also in this thread). If you don't want to do that, you can always go the route of having the dealer do it. If your a little tech savy and can follow directions, TechStream is pretty easy to get installed and flash the new TSB.

If you flash back to stock(testing purposes) , does your calibration id change like if you never had a TSB done? ?

Definitely better tip-in and power range of gear holding with the 91 base over 87

You can't go backwards if you do the TSB. If you go to 4b04, you can't go back to a previous calibration.

So flashing back to stock means you are flashing back to the TSB? Just wasn't sure since I thought 4b04 is for TSB only.

If you have done the TSB and are on 4B04, you can't go back to previous calibrations. Once you flash the TSB, your calibration is 4B04.
Flashing to stock doesn't necessarily mean you are flashing back to TSB if you are on previous calibrations.

People make the mistake of thinking that their ECU calibration is the stock map. Which is only accurate at a stretch.

For example, let's say you go from 04B03 to 04B04. You have updated the ECU version, and in doing so, you flash the stock map for that new ECU version simultaneously. You then flash an OVT map. Your ECU version stays the same, with the map having overwritten the stock map. If you wanted to return to stock, you'd have to flash the 04B04 OEM map, because your ECU version changed. ECU versions are not just maps. They're calibrations. The puzzle board/frame, so to speak, while the maps are the pieces that fit within.

I had to flash the TSB (04B04) on my 2016 using Techstream before I could install the tune. Fairly easy process if you're a little tech savvy. Install Techstream, download CUW files. Double click on the CUW file for your truck and flash.

My understanding of what you’ve described here is: If I flash the downloaded OV stock tune I’m flashing back to the current ECU version OEM map ?
