I'm in the same boat, although the smoothness on 1.02 vs. 1.01b is night and day. I have been thinking of going back to 1.01b but the engine really purrs on 1.02. There was a guy a few pages back who was complaining about how the engine was whining at 2400 rpm... Mine feels like its purring at that speed and at idle you can hardly tell the engine is running.

1.01b has and continues to be the smoothest release for me, but it seems to take 150+ miles for it to settle to the ridiculously smooth drive I can get once it stabilizes. Whereas 1.02b was the opposite - great initially then things seemed to get confused. At this point I'll probably run 1.01b for a little while and let the 1.02 release harden with all the good work Mat's doing.

Props to the testers out there helping him dial it in.

As of now yes, the only version that's available requires you run 91+ octane. He is working on a release that will allow 87 but all those on the tune currently must run premium. ...and it runs damn smooth when you do with a few more ponies under the hood that you can feel

I almost have myself convinced to run 91 when I buy the tune....of course all we get around here is 87, 89 and 93....if I wanna run 91 I'll have to mix and match and that is too big a PITA. 93 is 60 cents more a gallon here than 87...decisions decisions.

So it's about 8-10 bucks more per tank. I could see that being an issue for someone on a tight budget. To me it was worth it. I always ran premium since the day I bought my truck. I read that that's what Toyota engineers ran while testing so I figured I better run it too. I accounted for this in deciding of I could afford the truck or not. Keep in mind you will get better gas mileage with the tune and premium over suck and 87.

    Edit: stock and 87

Prob due more to premium having less ethanol and helping efficiency. $10 a fill up a week, 52 weeks in a year adds up, and that's assuming gas prices stay the same. I bet there's a difference in performance though. I'd like to see numbers and feedback on 87 before I make a decision either way.

yeah, also being not too far from you we just don't get the mid-step between 89 and 93 ;) The pump hits a little more on premium but it burns cleaner, has more additives to reduce build-up and keep things clean. in my case, here in TN 93 doesn't have any less ethanol so my MPGs aren't much different between regular/premium. and buying premium + pure gas = about $4.00/gal here. Truck seems to like VPower with the tune though

I did read the first post very carefully, did you not? He says "1.02 87 octane (minimal extra power expected, but all other features applied). I am wanting to know if anyone is running 87 octane or do you feel like you have to run premium?

That tune does not exist yet. It is in process.

You asked a non-specific, single sentence, open ended question that has been asked repeatedly. You should not be surprised when you get a snarky reply. If you wanted subjective feedback on driveability 87 vs 91 then you need to ask that. Otherwise you get the response to the question you asked or a snarky reply.

I think the line you quoted is pretty clear. With the 87 tune you will be getting driveability enhancements, but no significant power gains over stock. If you have the 87 tune you can run 91 if you want but it likely won't gain you much. If you have the 91 tune you have to run 91+. Pretty simple.

Wrong. Premium fuel is exactly the same as 87, just harder to ignite (higher octane) due to additives

There are plenty of suppliers that treat 91 with different additive packages and some will reduce ethanol content or keep it ethanol free but are generally marked as such.

    False.

    How do I know?

A best friend of mine works for QA at shell and checks fuel before it leaves. I’ve asked him tons of questions about fuel and the process it goes through.

They make 87,89, and 93 blends but they make them at lower octanes in preparation for the octane boost ethanol gives the fuel.

He used to run the engines that were designed to test each octant.

But they are all separately refined at the refinery.

Well, @OVTune , you’re doing big things. This thread is now has the most replies in the 3rd gen section. The thread that is behind yours was created in August of 2016! While yours was created June of 2017! Also, this post would be the second highest reply count in the 2nd gen section and BARELY behind in the 1st gen section!

Keep up the good work! We’re really glad to have someone who is solving our 3rd gen problem, rather than putting some duct tape on it.

    Thanks for everything!
