Mine was dirty/had a film on it with 2500 miles on the ODO. After cleaning I could tell an increase throttle response and "pep".

Yea I think a few of us have been surprised too, but the difference before and after the clean is significant. You guys shouldn't have to check the MAF, CPS, and hoseclamp but alas it's a turd gen.

@OVTune, I'm sorry if you've already been asked, but have you seen anything in the ECU that would suggest that just running 91/93 octane will gain some power over regular gas?

Simple logic will tell you that direct injection engines benefit from higher octane fuel.

Unless they are tuned for lower octane fuel.

subd. Interested in results with fuel maps for upgraded exhaust.

Also, haven't read through the whole thread, but are you modifying the air injection system? That could throw off your dyno readings.

I guess I should rephrase: typically, direct injection engines benefit from higher octane fuels.

I asked that specific person this specific question because I want to avoid the pissing match that this forum has devolved into almost every time it's brought up, because nobody knows for sure that this engine with this ecu can take advantage of high octane gasoline. Yes, it can benefit with a proper tune (as with any car), and when 93 is specified, it's usually because of the tune allowing the benefits in increased timing/optimized fueling. I'm interested in if this ecu with this engine in these trucks does have that capability, or if the benefits of higher octane will only be had with a tune.

Tuning for 93 octane seems pointless to me, if you want to tune for a higher octane I would tune for 100+ octane. The gains will justify the cost.

These are still people's daily drivers, I don't have access to 100+ nor would I want it.

If I had access to 100 Octane I'd love that.

I ask primarily because the Lexus GS350 has the same motor with the same basic specs, but is rated at 311 hp with 93 octane. That 10% gain is right on the threshold of whether you can really feel it in the butt dyno, and a real dyno or looking critically at the code are the really surefire ways to tell if filling with premium has any effect, or if we can achieve that only with a tune. Data always trumps the butt dyno IMO.

The Lexus 2GR gets 311 at 6600 rpm. The Tacoma 2GR peaks at 6000.

I doubt you can get that much gain from re-tuning to 93 octane. The Lexus may use the same engine block, but my guess is different the bore/stroke, cam profiles and timing are generating the extra power.

Race fuel is hard to come by and I'm not suggesting you go that route. I have a friend who did that to his CTSV and it made a world of difference, however he had to store race fuel in his garage. Point I was trying to make is you would probably get better gains for your money from a fuel remap on a performance exhaust and mid-grade octane fuel vs remap for higher price 93 octane.
