    Yeah, this is a fair point. The graphs I've seen point towards there being some more power in RPM, which can only be unlocked with a tune. The peak torque on the GS350 is about 15 lbft higher at the same RPM though, so that extra 15 through the range with better gas would be great, even if it's not up top.

    I've done some research. They are both the 2GR-FKS, same compression ratio, same cams, everything points towards the same motor from throttlebody to catalytic converter. The GS350 makes about 15 more lbft at the same RPM as our motor, so if we could gain 15 lbft through the range that'd be worthwhile, at least to me. But that's not really something I can tell easily through the ol' butt dyno.

    I think E85 would be the way to go, as opposed to higher octane fuels. When E85 is mixed right it's close to 105 octane.

    This motor, from what I understand, is "capable" of 13.5:1 static compression, but it never achieves this number because it hangs the intake valve in a pseudo Atkinson cycle. If the compression can be changed via cam timing control, it is possible to make big gains on 93. The gas cap "says" no E85(most likely because the computer cant sense it i.e. flex fuel sensors), but I am wondering if everything in the fuel system is E85 safe for a full time E85 tune. If it is, you can run E85 with no detonation at 13.5:1 static compression all day long and make BIG power. NOW whether the pistons in this motor are forged, which I doubt, then you can run into bigger issues since a cast or hyper-e piston doesnt tolerate detonation at all and will crack ring lands.

    I remain skeptical to that, auto manufacturers will change certain components on motors with the same engine code at times for tuning purposes. Lets see what the OP can discover here.

    E85 is almost never E85... And without an ethanol sensor and tables to control various mixes, it gets sketchy. I dont think this truck has an ethanol sensor.


    ETA: E85 without being able to take advantage of the high octane via increased compression, isnt really worth all the trouble....

    Since youre singling out direct injection, what difference would a higher octane make in an DI motor as opposed port injection ?

    Looking for 10-15% gains on 91/93. Will be deleting the back cats with the Spec U exhaust system and looking at improving intake flow. Then will see what custom tweaks OVTune can do to make it run in the sweet spot after exhaust and intake upgrades.

    Higher octane can allow the ECM to advance timing. At least, that's how the Ford engines act when using higher octane pump gas. Also, direct injection engines are usually at a higher compression ratio which can help take advantage of the higher octane. Port and throttle body injection are also an option but obviously requires parts.
    It's not an exact science and quality can certainly vary, but IMO it's more feasible than wanting to use race fuel.

    A flex fuel tune on these trucks would be wicked. There would be some great power capability there, especially off idle.

    I don't blame you, I started looking because I was skeptical. That's why I started asking OP about the octane question directly, he'd know better than any of us.

    there is zero difference...

    HOWEVER a lot of the newer DI motors are ALSO running higher compression ratio's which CAN take advantage of the higher octane ratings.

    Without an ethanol sensor(I am guessing this truck does NOT have one) you cant run a flex fuel tune. You also need access to tables in the ECU that the flex fuel sensor references. Even a straight E85 tune requires all of this because E85 is RARELY E85 from the pump... I have a bunch of Corvette buddies that run E85 and they say its generally in the 50-60% range, but the Corvette ECU has Flex Fuel capabilities so its not an issue.

    On the subject of fuel cutoff...

    This has me wondering if this tune will affect the injector cleaning cycle? Could the tune cause the injectors to get dirty faster? If so, would the factory cleaning schedule compensate; or, would the tune have to include a mod to compensate?

    What does this have to do with fuel cutoff?

    When my truck was newer (and during and for some time after driving it on a vacation) my Scan Gauge frequently indicated fuel cutoff (i.e. 9999MPG). Now that I rarely drive further than 12 miles per trip the SG never indicates fuel cutoff on the same trips it used to cut. This has me thinking the fuel cutoff is somehow dependent upon the cleanliness of the injectors.

    Normally when things are changed from one chassis to another it's never a critical component (like pistons, crank, etc) but more trivial things like some sensors, or exhaust header shape, intake manifold sometimes.

    for example the "2GR-FE"...it's all over the place and all are near-identical.

    Exhaust header shape and intake manifold design can affect an engines HP / Torque potential.. but still doesn't matter. I'm more interested in your before / after dyno charts.

    Piston design is more important than being forged or not.

    We have tuned the Mazda skyactiv 13:1 compression with 10psi of boost on 93 octane without a hint of detonation. 13:1 compression, boost, pump gas.

    Design is the key

    So a few of us are talking about theory on what this motor MIGHT be capable of now that the tuning side of things is being cracked and we are dorks bickering back and forth and WE should shut the fuck up... please... We are actually ADDING to the discussion of what might be capable with full control of the motor instead of idiots posting fucking popcorn pictures... Sorry that a technical discussion in a TECH FORUM is out of line...

    As you can tell from the OP quoting and responding to one of my "out of line" posts, at least he thinks the discussion is somewhat on topic and interesting...

    Ill go back to drooling out of the left side of my mouth now waiting for the results from tomorrow...
