I wonder why my stock automatic works so well in the mountains. I have made 2 trips to the Blue Ridge and my cruise works flawlessly. Hardly ever drops more than 1 gear generally and mildly upshifts 1 gear after cresting. Am I just that lucky. For 2 years I have read the same issues with dropping to 4 or 3 and hanging up in the lower gears. The only complaint I have is the tendency to find 5 or 6 on a 42 mph flat drive.Performance wise mine runs pretty damn good with a CAI and catback. I do still plan on ordering a 102c or newer in the upcoming weeks.

Trust me, I'm right there with you haha. I have to drive 250ish miles later today so I was hoping the new iteration would be available for me to test on that drive!

It makes the AT drive like an AT should. Want to be in a lower gear? Press down the pedal a bit. Want to do lower? Press a little more. Its still gonna shift, but it's predictable and you at least FEEL in control of it with the throttle giving the orders...

I’m with the crowd that is waiting for the MT specific tune before I pull the trigger. I really want to see 1:1 throttle response and as much engine braking as possible. More power will just be an additional bonus. I do like to see the reports of emproved fuel economy.

I tow almost daily and the one thing I really wish these trucks had is more engine braking. It almost feels like the VVTI lets the engine freewheel. @nevadabugle is definitely on point with his statement about the predictable engine braking. When I do pull the trigger on this I will definitely send in towing data logs if it will help Matt in any way.

Unfortunately engine braking is largely a function of compression and large cylinders, neither of which the 2016 Tacoma has while coasting. The psuedo-atkinson cycle that the engine runs at low load pillages compression for the sake of using approximately 60-70% of the normal intake charge for efficiency reasons by leaving the intake valve open during part of the compression stroke. There is no way to make up for that but to get rid of the pseudo Atkinson cycle and run full compression during low load since bigger pistons arent an option.

These engines are fully capable of building high compression as per the specs. Matt has stated he can fully manipulate the valve timing on them as well. Hopefully he can shut down some of the intake valve duration on the deceleration to give us an improvement in the engine braking. As it seems he was able to do the opposite for the auto transmission crowd.... fingers crossed.

Wow, I didn't realize that he had that much control.
It would definitely be nice to be able to crawl down descents with no input required but with the engine braking being as non-existent as it is I'm not exactly holding my breath. Working on my left foot braking technique seems like a better use of time

I like where this discussion is going - a lot.

When DFCO shuts the fuel off, put the engine in full OTTO mode. Surely 11.8:1 compression in an engine that's not actually "running" would produce good engine braking.
On top of this, lower the fuel "back on" RPM to something much closer to idle, and change that silly cycle where the engine needs to rev up to 2000+ RPM before shutting down fuel again.

I don't tow (right now, anyway), but can see where the stock situation would be extremely annoying and even dangerous.

I foresee lots of testing on this to get it right, and perhaps even differing versions of the tune for ppl who offroad/tow/stay on the blacktop and don't tow.

Edit: I wonder if there's a way to link the selection of 4lo to a different "DEFCO" map/maps? I mean, when you think about it, the A/T guys get different shift maps and whatnot when they hammer the magic ECT button. Maybe even a tow mode for us that's enabled when using the same ECM input as the auto truck's ECT input. Mat tunes it, we just have to add a switch to the dash/overhead console. I bet our ECMs are identical as far as I/O pinouts go... HMMMMM

I gotta tell you... ECT on 1.02C-A/93 Octane. Wow. If you don't know what folks mean by "butt dyno" get your self educated, load the tune and hit that button! I would NOT want it on all the time it's so powerful but damn it's truly "fun mode" now!

To each their own. I love ECT esp in hilly, mountain, heavy load situations, but for daily driving in often slowmoving traffic it’s unnecesary for me...

I will say though D on the new tune feels like a more refined and smoother ECT from 1.01b in many respects

@OVTune I hav about 200 miles on 1.02C. I am a 04B11 ECU and I just got the following engine code associated with TRAC OFF and a CEL.

    The code is P0607
This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code, which means that it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles. Although generic, the specific repair steps may vary depending on make/model. This code basically means that the programminging the PCM/ECM (powertrain/engine control module) has failed. This can be a more serious code and may also be refered to as "ECM Internal Circuit Malfunction".

    Read more at: https://www.obd-codes.com/p0607
    Copyright OBD-Codes.com

I am reflashing to 1.01b which I ran for 900 miles with no issues.

    Please advise ASAP.
